How to improve yourself in life

“Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job”
~ Jim Rohn

When people say personal development, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Let me guess: you’re probably thinking about taking professional courses or reading a large motivational book.

Well, while these may also be seen as personal development, the truth is there is more to the concept than those.

Personal development is a field I love to write about. I am passionate about growing oneself, becoming the best version of yourself, and taking full control over your life.

As we move in the journey of life, it is very important that we stop to check our journey, reflect on our growth, and fix areas that we do not see growth.

Knowing how to constantly improve yourself every day is highly dependent on your self-development strategies. Despite the personal development tips already stated, you must have a personalized self-improvement plan.

So, why is personal development important? Personal development is important to your personal and professional life.

So, what is personal development? A complex definition of the concept of personal development would be “personal development is defined as activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital, facilitate employability, and enhance the quality of life and the realization of dreams and aspirations.”

Whew! That was quite serious, wasn’t it? Well, in a layman’s language, I’d say personal development is any defined activity that you engage in, aimed at being a better version of yourself.

Now, I think that is quite easy to understand. We are in the last month of 2020, can you say that you have grown in maturity, success, or satisfaction? If not, then you probably have not done anything to improve your personal development.

The good news is that you can still have another shot at developing yourself in the next 12 months and as you navigate through the journey of survival.

How? Well, in this article, I will be sharing 35 personal development tips that can help you change your life and become a better version of yourself. I know this sounds a lot but you don’t have to feel overwhelmed by these 35 steps. At the end of this article, I have attached a 30 day challenge you can embark on that is guaranteed to massively improve the quality of your life

One question I get from people when talking about personal development is “how do I develop myself personally when I am already where I want to be?”. And every time, I find the question quite interesting.

Personally, I do not think there is a stop to growth. There is always more, and you can be a better version of yourself. Always. So, if you are ready to go on this journey of self-development with me, grab a bar of chocolate, and let’s ride…

1.  Be Yourself

This is a personal development tip that I really love. As much as you can, ensure that you do not comprise your standards for whatever reason. You are who you are and no one can play your role like you do.

As humans, we have been wrapped in the sheaths of uniqueness, and we must live in that uniqueness fully. Know your worth and stand by what you’re worth.

In this journey called life, it is almost normal for one to get intimidated and most times, the intimidation pushes one to do things they ordinarily would not do. It is therefore important that you stick to who you are. Be original.

Do not compromise yourself for anything. This would not only clear all doubts about who you are, but would also boost your esteem. Be original.

2.  Identify And Follow Your Passion

In your journey to personal development, one of the tips you must note is that you must follow your passion. What are you passionate about? Identify them and devise ways of sticking to them till you get a hang of them and get to the apex in that line of activity.

I remember when I was in college, I was very passionate about writing, but the mistake I made at that time was to merely identify the passion. There was no concrete plan to follow through with the passion and ensure that I become the best in my field.

However, the day I realized that identifying my passion was not enough and that I had to aggressively follow it to bring it to actualization, I started seeing things differently. It’s a completely different story today. I am way better than I used to be and with the tenacity still in me, I will be even better than now in the coming days.

3.  Visualize Your Goals

 How to constantly improve yourself

Know what your goals are. Goals give us an idea of where we are going. If you do not know what your goals are, you would be facing the risk of being in a confused state for a long-time causing delays to your growth and personal development.

And perhaps, you already have your goals written down, you should ensure that you also visualize them. This is a common mistake made by a lot of people.

People tend to confuse writing down goals with visualization. They are both different. Visualization is taking a step further from just writing. In visualizing your goals, you create a mental image of what you think they are.

You simulate how want them to be achieved, how soon, and all other variables. Putting a certainty to these variables is the essence of visualization.

In the Life Compass Workbook, we have created several exercises that can help you easily and consistently visualize those goals as you rigorously work on them.

4.  Have A Winning Mindset

You are a winner and you must inscribe that in the notes of your mind. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Being a winner, with a winner mindset will take you far.

You’ll never be rattled by the problems of life. Whatever strides you plan to achieve, you must realize that it all starts from your mind. Your mind must be built towards achieving them.

Never see anything less than victory even before you approach your tasks. This is a very important personal development tip as it would not only help reshape how you approach things but also help you ensure that your goals are met. Have a winning mindset, and watch your goals come to reality.

5.  Do Not Be Afraid To Say “No”

How to improve yourself everyday

This personal development tip has to do with your mind. Never be afraid of saying no when you feel uncomfortable. When someone comes proposing things that are not in line with your personal standards or goals, ensure that you stand your grand and say no.

Do not be intimidated or manipulated into saying a “yes” when you intend to say “no”. This is because more often than not, you’ll end up being on the losing end, as it would look and feel like torture.

Take out the fear of being different. It is okay to be the only “no” in a multiple of “yes” replies. You’ll be shortchanging yourself big time by doing what you are not interested in doing.

6.  Be Reliable/Dependable

Be a reliable person. A reliable person is one that can be trusted with responsibilities. A reliable person knows to keep to their word.

When they say “yes”, you can go to bed knowing it’s yes. And when they say “no”, you can be sure that it is nothing but a “no”. It is a dent in your character if people cannot trust you. People should be able to commit tasks in your hands and be sure that you will pull them through.

7.  Learn The Qualities Of High Achievers

Tips for personal development

Readers and leaders. To truly be a great teacher, you have to be a great learner. If you have dreams of being a high achiever, then, you must ensure that you learn the qualities of high achievers. Who do you see as your role model? Study them. Know everything about them.

Imitate them if need be. It is very important that you master the qualities of high achievers. For me, I look up to some of the biggest bloggers and writers in the world today and remind myself that if I really want to be at the Zenith of my career, then I must focus on being a high achiever. And to do that, I have to be patient enough to learn from past high achievers.

8.  Be Consistent

In whatever you do, ensure that you are consistent. Consistency is a product of discipline. Choose your personal development strategy and follow through with it passionately.

Do you want to be a good story writer? Then write daily. No matter how busy you are, pick up your writing tool, and write about your day, or anything else.

Consistency is the basis of success in certain fields and without consistency, you would never be able to achieve certain goals.

9.  Overcome Procrastination

Self development strategies

For months, I battled the demon of procrastination. I had a hard time meeting up with my tasks and responsibilities and even could not process what it meant to be disciplined. It was so bad that it cost me many amazing jobs.

But thankfully, I overcame through a determined mindset. Procrastination is the thief of time. You would end up wasting your time on things that are not even relevant. For me, I strongly believe that to truly become great, procrastination must be completely killed.

10.  Hang Around Those Who Uplift You

Your circle matters a lot. Who are you surrounding yourself with? Who are you always around? You must hang around those whose actions push you to be a better version of yourself, not those who push you into vices.

This is especially important as we approach the new year. Know the people in your circle, focus on increasing the wealth of valuable people in your circle, and be willing to do anything to keep them around. Having them around helps shape your mind.

11.  Be Open To Learning

Self improvement ideas

No one is an island of knowledge. Ensure that you are open to learning. Be a voracious learner. Read as much as you should.

Open your mind to learning from the best people you can learn from. This is very important, because the more you learn, the better for you.

12.  Know Your Weaknesses And Strengths

Know what you are capable of, and what you are not. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What areas can you boast of being the best? And what areas do you think you need to improve in? Identify these areas and let them influence your personal development decision

13.  Be An Agent Of Change

Self improvement plan

Be active in effecting a positive change in whatever you are doing. When you get to a new place, look for new things you can add not only to beautiful the existing achievements, but also to be of value.

14.  Be A Better Listener

Listen more than you speak. When you listen, you give people the opportunity to trust you with information, and at the same time, you do not miss any necessary opportunity. Being a better listener gives you the opportunity to be a better advisor.

15.  Think Outside The Box

Be creative in solving problems. When tasks are handed to you, do well to creatively attack them. Ensure that you think outside the box, and look at problems from new perspectives.

Thinking outside the box is a very important skill. In a world where people have learned to see things in a negative light, ensure that you see things from a positive angle.

16.  Stop The Blame Game

Take responsibility for your actions and inactions and quit blaming your superiors or subordinates. Whatever task you are given, ensure you do it to the best of your ability. Nobody cares about your excuses! Just do what you have to do.

17.  Reflect On Your Habits

Habits are an integral part of everyone’s life. They form the core of who you are, and you must pay attention to the habits that enhance your betterment and those that diminish you.

Know exactly what your habits are, and take out the ones that are dangerous to your growth process.

18.  Know When You Are Most Productive

There is something called “prime time”. Your prime time is that time when you are most productive. For me, I am an early morning person. I give more productivity early in the morning because of the serenity that mornings come with.

So, it is very important that you pay attention to your most productive time of the day, and put more energy into executing your tasks at that time.

19.  Make A Good First Impression Always

First impressions matter a lot! When people meet you for the first time, what do they think about you? How do they see you? Do you come off as irresponsible? Or you give a reliable and dependable outlook? Knowing important details such as this would help you a lot in becoming a better version of yourself.

20.  Believe In Yourself

Know who you are, and what you are capable of. Believe in yourself and your strength. Self-belief is key in building your confidence as you approach difficult tasks daily.

21.  Exceed Expectations

When given a task, do well to always exceed the expectations of those who have given you the task. Never stop until you give the best in that role or task. Nothing but the best.

22.  Be A Good Time-Manager

Your time-management skill is highly important. Be a good time-manager and know exactly what you intend doing, and how you intend doing them. It is very important to know how well to manage your time.

23.  Do Not Be Afraid To Take Calculated Risks

Risks are inevitable at the end of the day. Ensure that you are bold enough to take the ones that you can take. Be calculative. Weigh the pros and cons, and go for it! In no time, you will be the best at what you do!

24.  Learn To Deal With/Handle Criticisms

Criticisms are a part of growth. I believe that for you to truly grow, you must be criticized.

So, when people criticize you, do not take it as an opportunity to insult them back or a robe to relent. Rather, be courageous enough to take in the criticism and work on it if need be. I must say here that it is important to be able to separate criticism from outright abuse.

25.  Try, Learn, Grow

Be intentional about your growth process. Do not give anyone the chance to trump on you. Develop yourself without even being told.

26.  Don’t Let People Tell You It Can’t Be Done

No matter what you have in mind, believe that you can do it, and no one can do it better than you! You are in full control of your actions, and you can determine how you want your destiny to go! Do not subject yourself to old beliefs.

27.  Learn A Language

You can also decide to learn a language. There are tons of language apps and software that have made this way easier.

28.  Learn To Play A Musical Instrument

Interestingly, you can also pick up the skill of learning how to play a musical instrument.

29.  Start A Business

What business ideas do you have? Pursue them aggressively! Do not let anyone tell you that it cannot work. Your business ideas are valid and as long as you are determined, you can achieve them.

30.  Read More

Invest in books and take out time to read.

31.  Stick To An Exercise Routine

Have an exercise routine and stick to it.

32.  Eat Healthier

Have a healthy eating habit!

33.  Watch And Listen To Positive Media

What you listen to can highly influence how you see the world. Ensure that you listen to positivity only. You can listen to motivational, inspirational podcasts, positive affirmations, inspirational TED talks and calming meditational guides

34.  Identify Ways To Grow Relationships

There are great ways you can grow your relationships. Identify them.

  • I liked it…truly inspiring…I liked the point of consistency in your work or whatever you do for better growth…you are right..I will surely try..

  • This is a really helpful post. I’m going to try my hardest to be my best self in 2021 and not procrastinate or doubt myself so much. I also need to work on consistency in a few aspects of my life. Great post

  • These are great suggestions. Some of them are things I already do (be myself, say no when I am not suited for something or I am too busy). My only suggestion would be to choose about 3 of these at a time to work on. Trying to incorporate 35 new behaviors into your life might be biting off more than you can chew. And a type A or perfectionist’s (not me, btw) head might explode.

  • I love the way you have crafted this article. Says a lot about the many ways we can help ourselves, yet fail to do so on many occasions. Thank you so much for sharing these valuable tips.
