How To Create A Personal Development Plan

Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.

To every successful path, there is a map outlined or a plan to conquer; the same is the journey of self-improvement, self-development, and personal development. Every situation, challenge, or experience is a stepping stone to grow, upgrade your life, plan better, and emerge into a better version of yourself.

This is something I struggled for so long to understand. I let the challenges, mistakes, and circumstances I encountered in life keep me from living my best life.

I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I couldn’t effectively plan my life, I was disorganized, I struggled to track my goals, keep check of all my activities, I let procrastination schedule my routines, I was stuck and confused for so long. My life was literally opened on so many tabs leading to constant delay, limitations, and failure.

I couldn’t effectively invest in myself, take care of myself, set healthy boundaries, improve my wellbeing, simplify my life, track my progress, align with my dreams, aspirations, and visions until I turned the hands of time and adopted the theory of planning.

A lot of us underestimate the power of planning or outlining an action plan to conquer and this is the bridge that will close the gap between where you are now and the goals you intend to reach; I did this for a very long time.

I saw the process of planning to be boring, stressful, less effective, and out of the line. I would set goals, new year resolutions with little or no planning, in the end, it was a total flop.

Instead of having a smooth journey during the pursuit of my goal, I ended up wasting my time. I had to start planning the right steps to take while going after the goals and of course, it was not as easy but my life had an immediate positive turn.

Imagine you were to go on holiday with no plans! It is very hard to enjoy your trip if you constantly have to make plans on where to sleep, or what to eat, or where to go. It could be really frustrating and that is exactly what the lack of a personal development plan does.

Personal development is a topic I love to write about. Its beauty is in the fact that it allows you to commit effort into becoming a better version of yourself. On a personal view, I think if you are serious and committed to growing, you must first have a personal development plan.

90 day personal development plan

A personal development plan is a well-outlined routine that is aimed at expanding your growth, especially in specific areas. In other words, it is a process that involves defining what you consider important, what you wish to achieve, the strengths you already have to help you achieve the goals, and what you need to improve and develop with time.

It is a complex process that requires a lot of thinking. This is because, a well-thought personal development plan, back up with the requisite discipline, would always yield nothing but positive results.

Over the years, I have carefully written out detailed steps to be taken regarding the achievement of certain goals. These writings, coupled with the discipline to achieve them, have helped me accomplish those goals in the set time.

If you are facing a challenge in reaching your goals, I think you need to get yourself a personal development plan. I remember going through something similar about four years back. I had created an exercise routine but for some reason, it was really difficult to stick to it. I had the plan written down but lacked the commensurate discipline to pull through.

This went on for weeks until I figured what was wrong: my personal development plan was not flexible, so disciplining myself to stick to it was bound to be tiresome. I quickly fixed the problem and four years later, I can say that’s one of the best decisions I ever took.

  2. A personal development plan helps you decrease the risk of things going south and, consequentially, increases the possibilities of having your life and plans going in the right direction.

In this article, I will give tips on how you can create a personal development plan that would help shoot you to that amazing height you aim to get to. I must warn that if you are here for little just-work-on-yourself tips, then I think you have come to the wrong place.

I know this sounds a lot but you don’t have to feel overwhelmed by these steps. At the end of this article, I have attached a 30 day challenge you can embark on that is guaranteed to massively improve the quality of your life

Let’s dive right in! The first thing you have to plot out is;

1.  Define Your Goals

personal development strategies

Before you define your goals, it is important that you understand who you are, what your purpose is, your passion, you determine your why, and how. This will enable you to effectively outline goals that will suit your life. If you do not know how to go about this, no worries.

I have created a life-changing and directional resource that will serve as a roadmap in directing you to effectively plan and figure out your life; The Life Compass! The exercises, prompts, questions, and self-improvement plans in the Life Compass will enable you to fine-tune your success compass and start heading in the direction of your dreams.

For you to achieve any goal, you must first define it. Definition is key in the pursuit of success. You have to be able to define exactly what you want because clarity is one of the most important qualities of success.

What are your goals? How do you intend to achieve them? What are the steps you are going to take in achieving them? A clear-cut answer to these questions would give you an idea of what you are in for. For me, I personally group my goals into several sections to make sure that all areas of my life are effectively planned these goals includes:

  • Career Goals.
  • Self-improvement Goals.
  • Relationship Goals.
  • Health Goals.
  • Finance Goals.
  • Spiritual Goals.
  • External Goals.
  • Family Goals.
  • Leisure Goals.
  • Mental And Emotional Goals.

I further break them into sections to enable me to effectively map out these goals into several areas of my life.

  • Lifetime goals.
  • Short time goals.
  • Long term goals.
  • Stepping stones goals.

After doing this, you need to write out a list of your goals, list them in order of importance, and group them into these categories. For a clearer and easy approach towards your goals, you can purchase The Goal Chaser as a master guide on how to set goals that will positively affect and upgrade all areas of your life.

P.S While implementing these goals, do not focus on the outcome goal or end goal alone but focus daily on their process and performance goals which are the behaviors and standards you constantly implement.

2.  Prioritize

importance of personal development plan

Priority is key. What do you prioritize? You can only give attention to what you prioritize. So, of course, what you do not consider a priority should not even be on your list of goals in the first place. The issue now lies in defining what you prioritize more and you prioritize less.

As an economist would refer to it, you might want to draw a scale of preference. Your scale of preference allows you to place more importance on the things you need more urgently.

Essentially, while coming up with a personal development plan, you should know that having to prioritize certain goals over the other is necessary as that would define where you commit your focus at every moment.

3.  Set A Deadline For Your Goals

Your goals are yours to achieve. They would never be more important to you than they are to someone else. So, you should set a deadline for them. Wondering what a deadline does? Well, research has shown that goals that are set with a deadline are more likely to be achieved than goals that do not come with a deadline.

So, you actually need to add a deadline to your goals. Also, having a deadline attached to your goal gives you the drive to keep going in pursuit of your goals. And of course, by extension, helps you lessen the distractions on your way.

4.  Understand Your Strengths

personal development plan benefits

You may not be a good singer, actor, or artist, but trust me, there is an area where you are above average. Many times, we do not know these areas, and so, we focus our energies on the wrong things.

If you are one of the people who do not know the areas of their strengths, feel free to ask someone around you. “What do you think is my area of strength is?” As shocking as their answers might seem, they are often correct. So, it is best that you understand what your strengths are, leverage on them to work on your weaknesses.

For instance, I love writing in a quiet place. I love the free flow of ideas that come with the silence of my environment. This can never be achieved at all times so what do I do? I concentrate more energy on the time of the day that gives me more productivity and that is at night.

So, my productivity is achieved to the fullest at that time of the day. So, you can be like me. Identify what your strengths are, ride on them, and use them to work on your weaknesses.

5.  Recognize Opportunities And Threats

The next thing to be considered in developing your personal development plan is the recognition of your opportunities and threats. You have to be wise in that regard. Certain opportunities to achieve your goals will come to you but in the long run, you would find out that they were actually harmful to your growth.

So, really, what’s best for you is to carefully lookout for genuine opportunities that would be beneficial to you and make the best out of them. Also, you must be on the lookout for threats. What habits do you have in your life that might hinder the achievement of your goals? Identifying these habits will determine your next line of action.

One truth is that, if you are serious about making your goals a reality, then you must start doing certain things and stop doing certain things. You might have to make a list of the things you want to start doing and those want to stop, to aid the growth process.

You can properly evaluate and access this by using the Goal Chaser Workbook. There are several exercises that will enable you to recognize opportunities and threats and know to tackle them.

6.  Develop New Skills

This is another thing you must consider important in your pursuit of personal development goals. As you take certain steps in actualizing your personal development plan, it is very important to open your mind to the acquisition of new skills and that you know how to valuably invest in yourself.

In your pursuit, you might need to learn new skills and gain new knowledge; you will see how easy it is to make your goals a reality. Developing new skills works with your mind; in other words, you must be willing to open your mind to new knowledge. Essentially, the actualization of your personal development plan involves developing a new skill.

7.  Take Action

Remember, none of your plans would actually see the light of the day if you do not take action. This is where discipline comes in. In almost all of my posts, I have talked about the importance of discipline. None of your goals will be achieved if you do not have the requisite discipline to pull them off.

This is because the actualization of certain goals would require some inconvenience. You might have to deliberately starve yourself of certain frivolities just to make your personal development plan a reality.

8.  Get Support

A tree cannot make a forest. In actualizing your personal development goals, there are times when you will have to seek for help. At a point during my days in college when I needed to achieve certain academic goals. I was not honest enough to admit that I needed help.

I wallowed in the pit of ignorance and allowed myself to be messed up. It wasn’t until after a while that I decided to confide in a friend who referred me to someone who could help me achieve that particular goal. I reach out to them and thankfully, things changed.

Also, in developing your personal development plan, you could ask a friend some helping questions like “what do you think about me registering for a gym?”. Your friend’s advice would help you in knowing what steps to take and what not to.

9.  Measure Your Progress

It is important to measure your progress! As you develop the plan and commence its actualization, you would need to be careful to ensure that you are actually progressing. Many times, what we see as progress is just our current reality manifesting in another light.

So, it is best that you actually sit back and ask yourself certain questions. “Am I really making progress?”, “Am I achieving my goals?”, “What better way can I attack this goal and make it more feasible?”, ”What’s working well?”, ”What do I need to change?” These questions would help you begin to see your current reality in another light.

The best motivation you can get in achieving your goals is your ability to be persistent in your pursuit. Trust me, you will make progress. It is important to note if you are moving forward and actually write down the factors responsible. If something is not going well, that means you need a change of plans. Write down things that you need to improve and define things that you would like to try.

10.  Accept Changes

You must be able to accept the phases of change while we strive to survive. We oftentimes grow into several comfort zones while pursuing our goals, chasing our plans, up-leveling our lives, and any disturbance of that, we are disturbed.

You have to be opened to several challenges, phases, situations, and experiences life peels open. You will be beaten down, challenged, hurt, and put through a lot but you must emerge successfully.

I know that we all encounter challenges and struggles which may sometimes suppress us but we still carry so much light. No matter the phase, chapter, crossroads, or journey you walk through, there is a fire raging inside of you, a flame that does not go out.

So, do not allow anyone or anything to try to extinguish your flame; it is mighty, it is brave and it is you. In those challenging phases or situations, remember that flame and feel it burn; that is your power and that flame was born to never die.

Do not play down the safe road. Chase life with excitement and not security, because the more security-oriented you are, the more disturbed you’ll be with every change that happens in your life. Everything in existence is changing, nothing is constant, so if you resist change you are resisting life, growth, and development.

So, there you have it! Amazing tips on how you can develop a personal development plan. I believe that these tips would aid you in achieving your set goals. Remember, no one ever gets their goals without planning. You need a plan to get that goal to become a reality.
