“Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect”

Wondering how to start the year 2021? You are reading the right piece!

For many, the year 2020 will never get erased in the lanes of memory. Battles were fought, victories were won, and defeats were recorded. Whatever your case was, you can rest assured that the future is loaded with even better opportunities.

The beginning of the year is symbolic of a personal change for so many people. And this is why the commons saying “new year, new beginnings” is used to signify a change as a result of self-reflection.

In a matter of days, 2020 will be over and we’ll all be ushered into an entirely new year! No doubts, 2020 has been a revealing year. For me, I have learned a lot more about myself, especially practical lessons on how to start the year.

I am also certain that almost everyone has lessons they’ve learned too. Whatever lessons you have learned this year, ensure you keep them handy as they would be of use in the next year. As usual, in a few weeks, we would all stay awake to herald the beginning of a new year. A new journey commences as we all strive to make sure every day counts.

What are your plans for the start of the year? New year resolutions are set to face new year challenges. A lot of times we make New Year resolutions and end up taking an entirely different route less than a quarter into the year. At the beginning of the year, you should have a skeletal plan to get you started.

Nevertheless, these plans are not resolutions. Rather, they are scheduled activities to get you prepared all through the year. Once you can put these things in place, your journey through the New Year 2021 would turn out to be an exciting one.

1.  Have A Theme For The Year

New year new beginnings

This is one mistake many people make when planning on how to start the year. A theme can be few words to explain what you want to achieve for the year. It must be easy to remember and can spur you to action during the year.

A yearly theme is a simple way to keep yourself on track and prevent yourself from feeling like a failure and the best time for this is at the beginning of the year.

The beauty of having a theme for the year is that they help you feel good on the way to achieving your goal. Also, make sure your goals are paired with your themes because they will compel you to stay inspired until they are achieved.

2.  Plan And Set A Vision

What is your vision for the new year? How do you intend to start the year? Where do you see yourself six months into the year and at the end? These are questions you must ask yourself before setting a vision for the year.

Your visions are your aspirations and so it is expedient that you take some time to relax so you will be able to reflect on the passing year, what you have achieved and what you hope to achieve in the new year.

Writing down your vision increases your motivation therefore it is better that you thoughtfully figure out your vision and write them down alongside actions you must focus on that would bring you closer to your vision.

3.  Declutter And Reorganize So You Have A Fresh Space To Kick Off The New Year (Especially Taking Out Christmas Decorations)

Every individual has a few items in their closet that they have either outgrown or do not fancy anymore. These items sometimes take unnecessary space, making the house look clustered.

As you begin a new year, getting rid of these items is something you should do as a way of clearing up spaces for whatever new items or properties you might acquire.

Decluttering is a big way to begin your plans on how to start the year. You can decide to give out the items that are still usable to those who need them but may not be able to afford them.

Also, you can organize sales that can fetch you extra money for other bills. Recycling some and throwing away the ones that cannot be used is a good idea.

Clearing out your stuff makes it easier to do a thorough cleaning and it also makes you aware of items you have and the ones that need replacement. And you must not forget to take out Christmas decorations too.

4.  Embrace A More Positive Mindset- (Start Celebrating Your Obstacles)

Beginning of the year

A positive person is one who is characterised by influence for the better. You must embrace a positive mindset as the year begins and to have a positive mindset, you must first train your mind not to entertain negative thoughts.

Of course, negative thoughts pop in from time to time but they only begin to take effect when you entertain them.

Here are some simple ways to keep a positive mindset;

  • Fill your mind with positive input
  • Make yourself a major source of your positivity. Your positivity must not be dependent on a situation or person.
  • Start a gratitude journal
  • Take real breaks from time to time
  • Discard every form of negative thoughts as soon as possible

A famous saying goes thus “Failure is a journey to success”. Your obstacles mean that you are trying and they should not discourage you.

Whenever you face an obstacle during the year remember that the darkest part of the tunnel is an indication of the light preceding it.

5.  Manage Your Finance

Knowing how to start the year is largely hinged on how well you know how to manage your finances. The best way to manage your finance is to prepare a feasible budget at the beginning of the year.

Your budget is the financial plan you have for the year. It serves as a guide to achieving all your financial aims and making life easier for you.

Making a budget is important as it allows you to plan your spending. Unplanned spending like impulse buying can sometimes make you use up money meant for something else.

However, creating a budget in line with your income can help prevent such.

Budgeting helps to ensure that you have money for the things you have to do, it also keeps you away from debt which may arise from borrowing to pay bills or solve an important problem. Making a budget is pretty easy, just follow these steps;

  • Calculate your income: This is the first and most important step to take in creating a budget. Preferably, calculate what is left after tax and any other form of deduction.
  • Write down your expenses: once you know your total income, the next thing to do is to make a list of all your expenses including bills you have to pay, the amount you need to stock up your house, and every other expense you need to cover
  • Track your spending: it is important to track your spending to be sure it is in line with the budget. Tracking your expenses helps to ensure that you stick to the budget you have made.
  • Set financial goals: your financial goals can be an amount you intend to save at the end of the year, expenses you need to cut down, or even how you intend to make extra income probably through a side hustle or working towards a pay raise at the office.

6.  Start Prioritizing Yourself

New year resolution

You must realise that you are the most important person in your life and you must put that to mind before you make a decision. Take time out to thoughtfully take out everybody in your life, look at yourself and where you are with the achievement of your own goals.

This new year, you must learn to give yourself the attention, compassion, time, and energy that you truly deserve. Take breaks when your job gets overwhelming, spend time with family and loved ones if it helps you relax, register for a class in something that interests you, hike, do yoga, go on a vacation.

Be unapologetically dedicated to giving quality time to yourself this new year and no matter how selfish it sounds, you cannot take care of others, if you are not well taken care of.

7.  Build Stronger Relationships

Healthy relationships give you a greater sense of purpose and it is important that you maintain the relationships you already have or start to build one if you don’t.

To maintain a strong relationship, you must learn to accept and celebrate differences. Listen more and speak less. Develop your communication skills and learn to check up on people.

Remember things that are important to others, either an event, a hobby, or something they told you about. It is important that you also learn to manage your emotions and temporarily put those feelings aside to fully listen to and engage those in your life.

When possible, share a situation from your own experience to show that you can relate to other’s experiences, but you must stay in check so it does not seem like you are trying to overshadow their experience. This requires empathy and being sensitive to their feelings.

8.  Go For A Health Check-Up

At the beginning of a new year, you must schedule a complete checkup to know the state of your health. Most people take issues of health for granted.

They put all other things over their health without considering their well-being. Regular checkups help detect any possible health issue that may become a problem in the long run.

Most medical problems are easily solved when detected early. Hence, to learn how to start the year, you should make regular checkups a part of your routine.

The frequency of your check-up should be determined by your age, gender, family health history, and current medical condition.

For a younger individual, you can choose to go for a complete checkup once or twice in three months. Meanwhile, an older person should consider going for a checkup at least once every month.’

9.  Build Stronger Boundaries

You need to set strong boundaries when planning how to start the year. Boundaries are basic guidelines that you create to establish how others are to behave around you and they are important because they set guidelines on how you want to be treated.

As the year begins, you must thoughtfully name your limits as you cannot set boundaries if you are still unsure of where you stand. Tune into your feelings, consider your past, present, and the future you are trying to build, and set boundaries.

If you already have boundaries, you must make sure they are healthy because poor boundaries lead to vulnerability and disorganization. When you learn to say no to things and people you do not want, you would have a more fulfilling year.

10.  Take Baby Steps Towards The Life You Desire

How best to start the year? Do not rush. Little drops of water make a mighty ocean and the beginning of the year is a good beginning to start to walk towards your dream.

The key point here is to take baby steps which is one step at a time. How you are starting does not matter as much as you starting. If you have already figured out your dream life, write down short term goals that will bring you closer and closer to it; if you have not, set long term goals that would put you on the track to your dream life.

So, there you have it! 10 things to do at the beginning of every year. Now that you have discovered these very insightful ways on how to start the year, your life becomes easier. The difference between one who makes plans and someone who doesn’t is preparation.
