Sometimes, you may not feel confident, but you have to beat every odd to be your best self. Your self-esteem shows whether you should be tossed around or held in high regard.
It’s going to be an exciting journey as you read.
What Is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem, also referred to as self-worth, self-respect, self-regard, or self-pride, is the knowledge of one’s worth, valuing oneself, and having confidence in oneself.
Self-esteem has to do with beliefs about yourself, whether positive or negative, including pride, shame, hopelessness, or triumph. It comes in two types; high self-esteem and low self-esteem.
A person with high self-esteem is perceived as an optimistic person ready to defend their values and principles even when the opposition feels insecure. People with high self-esteem have a firm belief in themselves and anything they do.
People with low self-esteem are insecure about everything about them and around them. They are pessimists; they have a negative outlook about everything.
An individual with low self-esteem waits for others’ approval or praise to ascertain their self-worth. Therefore, such people must find ways on how to build self-esteem.
Psychologists have posited that when you value and think well of yourself, it motivates you to reach your full potential.

20. Effective Communication

Communication is a crucial factor when you want to improve your self-esteem. It shows your confidence and increases your chances of being heard.

How Do You Develop Self-Esteem?

Indeed, you want to develop high self-esteem, don’t you? I have come to understand that life doesn’t wait for you to get up. You have to beat every odds to be your best self.
It is doubtful that you develop self-esteem overnight. It takes time, patience, and personal conviction. Regardless, I will show you how to build self-esteem in simple ways.
1. Identify Your Negative Beliefs

During my college days, I was an average student, this was not because I didn’t like academics, but I couldn’t read courses with bulky textbooks. I felt it was impossible to read a 2000-word text and excel in the class.
Of course, I failed those courses because I questioned my ability to face ‘impossible’ tasks. Yours might not be like mine; we have different beliefs about ourselves, and the negative thoughts pull us down.
So to develop high self-esteem, you have to identify the negative beliefs about yourself. For example, do you often think you can’t pass an examination? Or do you think you can’t learn anything successfully?
You can write them out. This makes it easier to identify. When you identify negative beliefs about yourself, you have to challenge them. You should go from; “I can’t do this task” to “I can do this without any problem.”
It might not be easy transitioning to that stage, but trust me, within a short period, you will be confident. Do not see temporary setbacks as permanent situations; difficult situations do not last long.
One thing that can drag you back from achieving the above is negative relationships. So avoid negative relationships, don’t be around people who laugh at your mistakes, and take every opportunity to criticize you while hurting your feelings.
2. Identify Positive Beliefs About Yourself

You don’t need another person to tell you who you are; identify positive things about yourself. You should note good things about yourself, whether you are good in sport, excellent in a particular skill.
Positive thoughts do not only give you confidence but improve your mental health; positive thinking puts one in the right direction.
For example, I participated in an essay competition. Although all participants were asked to write an article with 4000 words, my colleagues complained about the word count.
They said words like, “How can I write this article?” but I told myself, “I can write this article. I am worthy.”
I wrote the article with no negative thoughts, and although I didn’t win the competition, I placed second. That’s the power of positive thinking.
Positive relationships will help you maintain positive beliefs. These people encourage you when you are down and make you feel good about yourself.
3. Take On Challenges

If you have low self-esteem, you may dodge challenges and difficult situations. You must face challenges and be confident in solving them.
For instance, you might have a presentation in your workplace that would attract over 100 people. If you have stage fright, do everything in your power to overcome it. There, you would have developed high self-esteem.
You can also try to do a task that can be in the form of a challenge. Some examples are going to the gym to keep fit, maintaining a balanced diet, trying out public speaking, reading a book, or saving money.
Once you accomplish these, you will be very confident in doing anything.
4. Be Grateful

Learning how to build self-esteem requires you to be grateful. My cousin, Matthew, bought a Mercedes Benz when he got a massive bonus at his workplace. All of a sudden, his junior colleague purchased a Porsche.
My cousin began to regret his decision to buy a Benz. He didn’t know that his junior colleague came from a very wealthy family and was gifted that car. Matthew was jealous, and he avoided speaking to him.
This affected his self-esteem, and he wasn’t proud of himself. Appreciate what you have, and you don’t have to compare yourself to anyone or anything.
5. Stop Worrying About What Others Think
When you worry too much about what others think about you, you will have weak beliefs about yourself. Decide to stop worrying about others’ opinions about you, make choices on what you want and not what others need from you.
How Do You Fix Low Self-Esteem?

People with low self-esteem feel incompetent, inadequate, or unloved. They are constantly afraid of making mistakes or letting people down.
In fixing low self-esteem, you have to identify the factors that reduce your worth. Then, when you remember them, it will be easier to fix them. So, let’s identify these factors and how to fix them.
1. Avoid Pessimism

Are you that person that has a negative outlook about everything? Delete every negative thought from your mind; positively look at things.
Positive thinking gives you a kind of confidence that will make you and others see your inestimable value. Structure your mind with positive thinking; positive thoughts attract positivity.
2. Check Your Perfectionism

You should set realistic goals, aim for things you can achieve presently. You don’t have to feel like a failure because you have not become a famous designer when you haven’t taken any design classes.
Managing your goals is essential; strive for them and remember that life is not perfect. You feel you have to get things right. Therefore, no mistakes should be allowed.
That’s wrong because errors don’t make you a failure. You just make mistakes in what you do. Successful people also make mistakes.
3. Negative Body Image

This is the most common type of low self-esteem. You should own yourself. Stop comparing yourself to others; it will only make things worse for you. Comparison steals joy; accept that everyone is different and remember who you are.
You should not stop making an effort if you have a poor body image, thinking there is no point. On the contrary, taking care of yourself is an act of self-care. For example, having a good haircut can work wonders on your self-esteem.
4. Fear And Anxiety

If you are afraid that you can’t make any reasonable impact or influence others around you, it all points to your low self-esteem. But, you can fix it by challenging your anxieties with facts.
For example, you may feel you can’t pass an exam. But, how true is it when you have not even written the exam?
5. Self Hatred
There are times when we all hate who we are or have negative remarks about ourselves. This is a sign of low self-esteem. Self-hatred is a combination of anger and frustration about oneself.
You should accept your flaws and understand that everyone is imperfect to fix this. Don’t do unnecessary things in a quest to change who you are; you are beautiful in your image.
How To Improve Your Self-Esteem As A Woman?

Do you know that women are more likely to have low self-esteem? It is increasing because many societal issues are directed at them.
For example, I was the type of person you would call fat during my teenage years.
My friends would constantly taunt me at every given opportunity. This made me try different products that almost killed me. As a result, I was behind my daily goals and failed at many things because I wanted to prove that I could have a great body.
As a woman, you should work on your self-esteem because we live in a society that has decided to tag females as weaker vessels. So let’s look at how to build self-esteem as a woman.
1. Write Positive Self Affirmation Notes

You indeed feel better when you write down things. It serves as a form of therapy. Positive affirmations will keep you in check. You have to repeat them to convince yourself.
You can write about things you are good at. For example, if you have good people skills, you can write, “I am good at managing people.” When you say this to yourself, you won’t think twice when asked if you’re good in that aspect.
Write positive affirmations in sticky notes and paste them on your refrigerator, windows, or any flat surface where you can see them every day.
2. Know Yourself

One of the ways to build self-esteem as a woman is to know yourself. Know what you want, know your desires and abilities.
Only when you recognize these can you value yourself; no one can look down on you. Then, nurture yourself into doing the things you love.
3. Respect Yourself
If you want to maintain high self-esteem, you have to respect yourself. Respecting yourself entails upholding your values without belittling yourself for others.
If you have no self-respect, you can’t expect others to because what value would you offer someone by respecting someone as lowly as you view yourself?
4. Know Your Strengths

I’m not good at sport; I suck at it, but. I am an excellent dancer. Dancing is my favorite exercise. So I had to quit athletic training and focus on my dance lessons to improve my self-esteem.
You don’t have to waste your time on something when you know it slows you down. Instead, build on your strength and be a master at it. When you receive positive results about what you do, it improves your self-esteem.
5. Start With Small Goals

Learning how to build self-esteem takes time. But, it is a process that you have to follow to improve. You can set goals that can accumulate over time and improve your sense of self-esteem.
When you achieve the goals, it will improve your confidence and self-esteem. Choose attainable goals. You can start with daily goals such as spending an hour in the gym or saving money every day.
Conclusion
You’ve seen ways to build self-esteem as an individual, but you have to avoid belittling someone. Don’t contribute to another person’s low self-esteem.
