Most successful people in the world today did not just become successful. They had goals and relentlessly pursued their goals.

To successfully set goals, one has to ensure that certain standards are met. These standards have been coined into an acronym: S.M.A.R.T, meaning Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Over the years, smart goal-setting has proven to be one of the most important steps to achieving goals.

It does not matter if your goals are long-term or short-term, the achievement of your goals relies solely on you and until you are ready to take responsibility, you may not make progress. To succeed, you need to set goals. In other words, the pursuit of success without proper goal setting is an effort in futility.

Goal-setting not only gives you a sense of direction but also allows you to determine if you are making progress or not. Every one of us wants to achieve something at some points in our lives. And as easy as it may seem to set goals, achieving them are not easy.

The importance of goal-setting cannot be overemphasized. This article will help you learn tips for achieving goals. Before we proceed, if you are wondering how to know what goals to set and what not to? I have created a detailed post on that and you can find it here, you’ll get more clarity regarding all you need to know about the types of goals you should set and how to set goals.

So many people reserve goal-setting for a new year which doesn’t have to be so, your goals and dreams are a product of how you see yourself, and if the need to upgrade your image and make immediate changes arises you shouldn’t wait for a new year, new month to outline those goals and start pursuing them.

what is goal setting

In this article, you will find the best ways on how to achieve goals and end up with that feeling of self-satisfaction and fulfillment. To achieve your goals, you must:

1.  Define Your Fears

smart goal setting

Think about what makes you afraid. What exactly is holding you back from pursuing that dream? Write down the worst things that might happen if you fail. Those exact things that make you so apprehensive of moving forward.

In an electrifying Ted Conference, Tim Ferriss mentioned that you need to train yourself to focus on separating what you can control from what you can’t control and you need to focus on the former because it decreases emotional reactivity.

He further encouraged that you should visualize the worst-case scenario that you fear would happen and is preventing you from taking action.

Ferriss made it more practical by defining and writing those exact things he feared, figuring out what he could do to decrease the likelihood of his fears manifesting and then what things he could do to repair the situation in case his fear manifested.

He calls this powerful exercise “fear-setting”. In his words “Fear setting is an operating system for thriving in high-stress environments”.

As much as you define your fears, do not dwell on them and let them push you to inaction. After accurately defining them and writing them down, the fears should further push you towards achieving your goal.

As explained above, you must specifically delineate your fears and write them down and take practical steps to decrease the likelihood of your fears manifesting.

Fear setting is an important tool in achieving your goal, so take action now and employ Tim Ferriss’ powerful tool of “fear setting”. You’d never gain mastery over how to achieve goals if you do not define what your fears are.

2.  Set Motivating Goals

It is important that you set your priorities right. Your goals should be something you look forward to achieving. If your goals do not excite you, then I doubt your chances of achieving those goals.

Set goals that are in line with the dreams and aspirations you have. Your goals must be in line with your passion because your passion is the underlying effect that drives your dreams.

Goal achievement requires a lot of dedication, discipline, and commitment and it would be hard to commit to what does not excite you. There must be value attached to achieving your goal and this should motivate you towards achieving them.

Motivation is what drives you towards a goal and when you begin to get tired, when you remember the value it would add to your life, you get revitalized. That is the importance of setting a goal that motivates you; when you get tired, because you are excited about the end result of those goals, you will always find new energy to push through to achievement.

Motivation is the desire that energizes and directs goal-oriented behavior. Set a goal that will revamp and rejuvenate you! Set goals that drive you towards your success! Setting goals on a job you despise would be strenuous to achieve because it is not something you are passionate about.

What are your dreams? Your aspirations? The kind of person you desire to be? The desired body figure you hope to have? The university you hope to attend? The job you hope to get? How do you hope to see yourself in two years? Answer these questions in all sincerity and set goals that would help you to achieve the answers to your questions.

3.  Set Specific And Attainable Goals

steps to achieve goals

Your goals must be specific and well-defined. When your goal is vague and lacks clarity, you do not have a sense of direction.

Decide exactly what you want and write them down as they are. To be more realistic and to create a sense of urgency and exigency, you can divide your goals into bits and set deadlines for them.

Make a written list of everything you want to do to achieve that goal and organize that list into a plan that you would follow through. Your goals should be explicit and unambiguous.

When your goal is as clear and specific as possible, you have a proper understanding of how to go about it and you are motivated to achieve it. In other words, taking control of how to achieve goals is highly hinged on how motivating your goals are.

Resolve to do something every day that moves you towards your goal. Like reading on a key subject, attending seminars, or volunteering where necessary. The best way to achieve any goal in life is not only to set them the right way but to plan the execution of these goals in achieving your dream.

You cannot just say you want to be successful; it doesn’t work that way. It is imperative that you define exactly what kind of success you want and write down practical steps that you want to take to achieve your definition of success.

Do you plan on passing an important exam? Write down your reading schedule, write down what distractions you hope to overcome, write down how many hours you plan to read each day, write down the exact grade you hope to get.

Do you set a goal that you want to cut down your expenses? Write down the things you want to stop spending on, draw out a savings/investment plan. You literally have to take practical steps to describe your goal in specific details and the steps you hope to take to achieve that goal.

goals and dreams

It is important that your goals are also realistic and attainable because if you set goals that you know you cannot achieve; you begin to doubt your self-worth. This does not mean you should set goals that are too easy or underestimate your abilities because you must also set challenging goals that would push your skills beyond the limit.

Nonetheless, you should set goals that you know are within your capability. You cannot set a goal to write 50 books in a month when you have not even begun your writing career. That’s somewhat unrealistic.

Don’t let your fieriness drive you to set goals that can eventually overwhelm you and make you feel dispirited and doubt your abilities.

Your goals must be relevant to the bigger picture of yourself that you must have painted in your mind but they must be as realistic and attainable as possible. A reason you seem to be walking around in circles may be because the goals you have set are too inundating.

4.  Believe In Yourself

types of goal setting

Don’t you dare underestimate your power to do what you put your mind to! If you do not believe in yourself, you cannot set the correct goals, and if you do you may feel like you would not meet up. Don’t let the fear of incapability stop you. Don’t let others set the goals for you because these can have several damaging effects on the achievement.

A person can positively motivate you towards setting your goal but that is totally different from wanting to achieve a particular goal because someone is doing the same or someone persuaded you to.

Setting goals for yourself helps to build your self-confidence and self-confidence is an important factor in goal-setting. As much as looking up to others and admiring them is good, it is more beautiful to look up to yourself. Be that person you look up to.

Be as optimistic and positive as possible and surround yourself with like-minded optimistic people. Get rid of every miniature form of negative thoughts about your goals as soon as you conceive them. Stay away from people with bad energy and rebuke negativity and pessimism.

Another way to believe in yourself is to acknowledge your past success and accomplishments. Most times, we prefer to acknowledge the success and progress of others but we keep reprimanding ourselves that we are not doing enough.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Acknowledge that you have also been working hard and no matter how trivial your success or past acknowledgment might seem, as much as possible, reward yourself and believe that you can achieve more. Aim high!

Don’t let low self-esteem incapacitate you towards achieving your goals. Believe you can do anything you put your mind to and you definitely will. Aim for the stars and do not limit yourself.

5.  Track And Visualize Your Success

Tracking your goals is just as important as setting them. Pay attention to the progress you are making. Every goal you set should have a measurable result that allows you to track your progress over time. After you must have organized your goals into plans and priorities you must take conscious efforts to follow up to see if you are making progress.

Long-term goals are important but you may not be able to effectively track its success until you break them down into short-term goals. When you set and track your short term goals, you know whether you are on track for your long term goals.

When you track your goals, you are able to measure your progress and be motivated to surge through and also see where you are not measuring up and adjust where and when necessary as quickly as possible.

Be accountable to yourself and be as honest with yourself as possible. Start tracking your progress in your goal achievement now. On a daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis depending on which kind of goal you have set. But I think at the end of every day you should check to measure your progress and see how far you have gone with achieving your goal. Follow through with how well you have achieved your goals.

In the words of Zig Ziglar, “If you want to reach a goal, you must see the reaching in your mind before you actually arrive at your goals.”

Also, it is important to visualize the end result of your goals and what it would feel like when you finally achieve them. Do not limit yourself to the fears you have or to the obstacles that you might face. Daily visualize yourself as if you have already achieved your goal. It would keep you excited and motivated.

Visualizing your goals will activate your creative subconscious which will help you generate more creative ideas to achieve your goal. It regulates your mind to perceive the resources you will need to achieve your set goals and when you feel like giving up it will continually give your mind renewal and new strength.

Close your eyes right now, and in as vivid detail as you can, imagine yourself as you have already achieved your goal. Imagine the sense of excitement, accomplishment, and fulfillment that you would have. So take your eyes off the obstacle and discomfort now and keep your eyes on the ball!
