The average human being has a truckload of unwanted materials or things to declutter all around them, either around their workspace or their homes. It is not uncommon to keep stuff we no longer use or need around us.
Everything from worn-out clothes, old stuff, or even pieces of paper are standard junk we usually forget to throw away.
The end result is that all those junk becomes congested around your home, and soon enough, your home could become full of so many things that you do not even need.
Sometimes, it can be an old property that we still share an emotional attachment to, probably a gift from someone special or because of a precious memory attached to it.
Nevertheless, what we fail to remember most times is that these things occupy space gradually, and getting rid of them can become an arduous task. Therefore, it is wise to learn to dispose of such junk, especially if it is no longer helpful.
This is where decluttering comes in and it can be such a tedious task. So, before we dive in, let’s look at some of the reasons why people declutter.
Why You Need To Declutter

Often, we fail to declutterour homes and environment because we don’t see the need to or know the advantage of decluttering. So, here are a few benefits of decluttering.
1. It Helps You Save Time

Do you often spend hours or more extended periods searching for items around you that are closer or not even lost/hidden? If you do, then you should consider decluttering your space.
Imagine how much time you’d waste every day if you always search longer for objects that aren’t lost. To prevent this, you should declutter your space soon and get rid of every material that is no longer needed.
It might require some effort, and time but it is worth it and will save you more time in the future. In addition, decluttering will make it easier to keep your environment organized and find whatever you might be looking for faster.
2. You Get To Save Money Too
Imagine being able to prevent yourself from spending more than you should. That’s another thing decluttering helps you do!
You can save all that money you would have used to get duplicates of an object that you can’t find and other minor expenses that come with the purchases.
3. It Saves You From More Stress

Recent studies show that it is easier to relax, concentrate, and focus in an organized environment. Having clutter around your space can affect your productivity and increase stress levels.
Let’s not even talk about how stressful it is to look for lost items and not even find them. You can prevent that by decluttering as soon and as often as you can
Things You Need To Add To Your Declutter List

A common struggle most experience when they decide to get rid of the unwanted junk is knowing and deciding what to throw away. Yes, choosing what to keep and what to throw away can be a bit difficult sometimes.
If you intend to declutter your office or bedroom, you should definitely read this article! To make it easier for you, I’ve made a simple and comprehensive list of things to get rid of at any place.

1. Old User Manuals
Does anyone even read user manuals? Well, a few people do, but many never return to it, except there’s a need for that, which often takes decades.
Nevertheless, since most people do not read user manuals, the manuals usually become abandoned at a random house or office location. It doesn’t always have to be so.
If you use a lot of electronics or gadgets, you might need to get rid of those user manuals after using the devices for a while. It won’t cost you a dime to dispose of them when you no longer need them.
2. Extra Cables And Chargers

I still wonder why we never get rid of these guys even when they are damaged!
But, yes, extra cables and chargers are also part of the many things to declutter. So, if you don’t need those cables any longer, get rid of them.
3. Old Shoes
Another household item that we usually forget to get rid of is shoes that are of no use to us. You don’t have to keep them as long as they are no longer fit, damaged, or too old.
Whenever you are cleaning your space, remember to add those old shoes that you haven’t used in ages to the things to declutter.
4. Old Make-Up And Toiletries

Old make-up and toiletries are classic examples of items that really should hit the bin when you are decluttering your personal space.
It’s alright to forget sometimes, but when you haven’t used your make-up or toiletries in months, there is a high chance of them getting expired.
Are you cleaning up your house today? Then ensure you throw away your old toiletries and make-up today!
5. Keys And Chains
After moving out to a new house or getting a new set of keys for your doors, you might want to get rid of the old ones too.
Many of us have the habit of leaving old keys or chains even when we don’t need them anymore. Don’t be among the many people who do that. Dump those chains and keys now!
6. Expired Medications

After getting healed from an ailment, it’s a common thing to forget your remaining medications for a while. And when you return, you might find out that they are expired and useless.
So when you do, do not hesitate to give them a permanent residence in the dumps.
7. Expired Food/Snacks
Yes, I know it is your favorite snack or dish, and I know that you enjoyed the last one so much. But you see, those snacks are expired now, which means that you do not need them any longer. So feel free to do the needful!
8. Old And Expired Cosmetics
Looking for things to declutter, here’s another important one. Medically, it is not advisable to use expired products as they can become toxic and cause harmful effects to the human body.
That includes expired cosmetics too. So, you might want to do a quick inspection of all your cosmetics right now. If you find any, do get rid of them.
9. Old Clothes

Old things should be disposed of generally, especially when they happen to be clothes that have spent decades in your wardrobe. Old clothes are great examples of things to declutter in the bedroom.
You feel attached to some of those clothes because of a distant memory or whatever it is, but once you don’t need them anymore, then you should send them to the bin.
10. Old School Work From Your Kids
There are a lot of things to declutter in your home. A good example remains old notebooks and school materials that your kids are no longer using.
You can either find other kids and give them or even burn them. However, do not let your kid’s old schoolwork materials stay in your home. Those things take up more space than you think.
11. Car Maintenance Items
It’s typical for car maintenance items to lose value or get damaged with time. Leaving them in your garage or the boot of your car won’t do much good. Getting rid of them when they are no longer needed is a way better option.
12. Lidless/Broken Water Containers

Since we all use water containers, it’s not strange for a lid to get missing or a container to get broken and damaged. No issue!
But by the time you begin to leave them piled up and unattended to in one of your parts of the house, then we’ve got a problem. Once a water container loses its lid or gets broken, I don’t see the need to keep it. Throw it away!
13. Spoilt Kitchen Appliances
Some things to declutter won’t always be in your office/ workspace or your bedroom. Sometimes you’ll find them in the kitchen. Items that you can add to your list of things to declutter quickly are damaged kitchen appliances.
The likes of blenders are a classic example. Once you find out that your kitchen appliances are beyond repair, then you really should let them go.
14. Office Supplies
Office supplies are also a typical example of things to declutter that we are most likely to forget!
Everything from stray pieces of paper, spoilt pens, plastic materials are stuff you should get rid of once you don’t use them anymore.
15. Old Calendars, Magazines, And Newspapers

There are tons of things to declutter that the average human being usually doesn’t notice until after a while. Old Newspapers and magazines are simple examples.
I’m never surprised to find old newspapers and magazines in a library or a location with more readers. Let’s not even talk about old calendars. Nevertheless, they should be disposed of after they have served their use.
16. Old Toys
How come most folks do not see old toys as things to declutter? We all know that life happens and that our kids won’t always remain the same.
By that, I mean they won’t always remain children. Soon, they’ll go off to college and won’t come home often!
Hence, they will no longer need their old clothes and toys. So, why keep them when your kids no longer need them?
If your kids are all grown up, you do not need to keep those toys anymore, except you plan to put them up for yard sale. If you don’t have any plans for them, then get rid of them the right way!
17. Empty Glass Bottles

Empty glass bottles are examples of things to declutter right now. Why? Once broken, empty bottles can become a source of danger to anyone nearby.
So, once you are no longer in need of them, do not hesitate to dispose of them wisely.
18. Old Books

I understand the horror that comes with doing away with books, especially if you are an avid reader or if those books are your favorite books.
It’s fine to want to keep them a little longer, but if you have read them over and over again and you don’t use them often, then you should consider letting them go. So yes, it’s time to add them to those things to declutter today!
19. Hair Accessories
I get it that your hair means a lot to you; trust me, I understand perfectly. However, keeping old hair accessories? I’m not a fan of that.
With time, your hair accessories can become host to dust, germs, and other unhealthy things that are not good for your hair, mainly when you have not been using them in a long while.
So, if you no longer need your combs, you should dump them right where they belong! And where’s that? The bin!
20. Damaged Electronics
Maybe we don’t usually dispose of old electronics because we don’t know how to. Instead of leaving broken electronics around the house, you can take them to electricians who might have better uses for them. It’s better than throwing them away.
21. Jewelry You Don’t Wear Anymore
Here’s an item you should add to your list of things to declutter; old jewelry. It isn’t strange to find rusted earrings and old jewelry on a lady’s table.
But I don’t see the use. If you don’t need them, then do the needful. Throw them away and put all those extra spaces to better use.
22. Old Towels And Bedsheets

Do you know you are at a higher rate of getting infected if you still use old towels and even old beddings?
I just wanted to remind you so that the next time you realize that your towels are old, you’ll have a good reason to dispose of them and get a new one.
23. Broken/Old Storage Containers
There’s always a constant want to keep and store things hence the need for containers. But with time, even durable containers can get broken and fail to get the job done.
Sometimes they might not be so bad but too old. Once they approach that point, they are of no use to you. So rather than leave the containers piled up around the house, it is wise to dispose of them appropriately.
24. Receipts You Longer Need

It’s alright to keep your receipts, mainly because you just bought a new tool or gadget. You might need it anytime soon.
It is inevitable for a time when you no longer need the evidence of payment you have been keeping to come. And this especially applies when the product doesn’t have any use anymore, or the warranty has expired.
There’s no use keeping a pile of old receipts when you don’t need them. Do well to get rid of them properly.
25. Old/Damaged Luggage
Your luggage where you keep your clothes when you travel is also an essential item to be considered in the list of things to declutter.
Especially when they get too old or damaged. It’s never too late to say goodbye to luggage that is no longer useful.
26. Your Emails Inbox

Emails are the most typical examples of things to declutter on your online accounts. Unfortunately, 90% of the email apps of most folks are home to a pile of messages that are not useful or helpful to the user.
It becomes difficult to organize important notes or extract vital information from your email app. So rather than go through the stress of searching for one email message, it’s high time you delete all others and are no more valuable to you.
27. Your Phone/PC Storage

Do you know that it becomes difficult for your mobile phone or computer to function at its maximum speed when its memory space is congested? A case like that occurs when you fail to declutter your phone/personal computer.
Your mobile phone or personal computer is home to many pictures, videos, music files, and other unnecessary pieces of information. It would be better to delete each item you do not need and preserve those you need.
28. Broken Artwork
I know that the concept of art is subjective but not broken art. Do you have any sculptures, paintings, or carved artworks that are damaged and destroyed? If you still do, I am telling you to get rid of them.
Broken artworks made of wood or glass can cause injury to your body. Therefore, it is advisable to get rid of that artwork once it is damaged. There is, after all, no use in keeping it!
29. Friends On Social Media

I’m cool with making and having lots of friends on Facebook and other social media apps, but there’s a point where it goes overboard! Yeah, even for an influencer! The problem isn’t the number of friends but the quality.
I mean, what’s the point of having over five thousand friends on Facebook with who you don’t communicate or have good relationships?
Just like how you declutter a house, you also need to declutter friends who do not add anything positive to your well-being and growth on social media. Trust me; you’ll be glad you did!
30. Old Movies That You Have Already Watched
I used to keep a pile of my favorite movies until I realized that I did not need them. Old movies that you have probably watched a thousand times aren’t going to be helpful to you anymore.
With time, you’ll get tired and bored of them. So instead of keeping them, a better option is to declutter!
For You
“Clutter is not just the stuff on your floor – it’s anything that stands between you and the life you want to be living.” –Peter Walsh.
The quote above proves how much decluttering affects our lives, progress, and growth in general.
It is a popular fact that you cannot attract something you want or expect if you do not create space. Yes, if you wish to own new things, you’ll need to let the old stuff go.
What have you refused to let go?
What are you still holding back?
There’s a considerable possibility that what you refuse to let go of might be responsible for the delay, struggles, and even challenges.
Today, I want you to make a conscious and intentional decision to declutter as much as possible. Not just around the house or workspace but also in your personal life.
Be sure to get rid of negative mindsets, toxic people, and anything at all that stops you from making headways. Maybe this will help you better understand how much decluttering helps you!
Imagine you are about to declutter your bedroom. Now, take a picture of the room before you declutter and begin to work. After you finish up, take another photo of your bedroom and compare both!
If you did it right, you’d notice a big difference in the state of the room. After decluttering, the picture of your bedroom will show a more organized, neat, and appealing space compared to the previous image.

The same applies to your personal life. You are bound to become healthier, lighter, and more at peace if you learn to declutter your life consistently.
It will leave you as a better person than you were, just like your room was after you decluttered.
Sometimes decluttering doesn’t involve throwing or shedding things away. Sometimes to declutter, you have to begin to learn, see and do things differently.
