100 ways to be mindful

Now, this is where I’ve got good news for you! If you are an avid reader of my blog, you know very well that I talk about journals a lot.

Well, my team and I have decided to stop doing the talking alone, we want to do the walking too! I am excited to inform you that the very first self-development journal and planner from the AFAM UCHE team are out! The Life Compass and Goal Chaser are two amazing resources you would need as you journey into the world of self-development. The former is a planner while the latter is a journal. Please, get yours!

As you already know, the benefit of keeping a journal is endless. Writing your feelings and experiences down helps gets them out of your busy head and you can start to see those feelings in the most objective way. Writing about those stressful or emotional events can help you improve your overall physical and psychological health.

2.  Slow Down

benefits of practicing mindfulness

Taking things easy helps you achieve and do more. A typical example is a carpenter sharpening his saw for so many hours to cut down a tree in seconds. When you slow down with your daily activities, you do more in less time and get double the result.

3.  Stretch Every Morning

Stretching is very much recommended before exercise because it improves blood circulation and flexibility.

4.  Try Exercising

You can start with light exercises daily. As you do the exercises, you should be very conscious of the changes your body experiences during and after the exercise.

5.  Practice Yoga

Yoga can be referred to as a group of mental, physical, and spiritual practices that originated in ancient India. The mind is continuously going back and forth, to the past and future, drowning you in a lot of thoughts, fears, and worries. A very good way to dispel this is to become aware of those thoughts. Yoga can guide you on this journey.

With Yoga, you can maintain a very composed and completely aware state of mind. When your mind is aware, you are sensitive to other people’s feelings and your general surrounding.

A clear mind is a very powerful weapon, helping you to make effective decisions. When the mind is calm, it strengthens your focus, creativity, and overall productivity and this is a necessary aspect of learning how to be mindful.

6.  Daydream

Mindfulness teaches us exactly how to deal with ‘stimulus-independent thought’. We all have several thoughts pop into our heads nonstop daily. It is normal for humans. The difference is in how we handle these thoughts.

Daydreamers will let these thoughts become a seed. After they are planted, they grow resulting in random and absorbing fantasies. Or they expand on a particular thought and get completely absorbed at the detriment of their awareness.

Practitioners of mindfulness usually aim to recognize such thoughts popping into their heads and let them pass without dwelling on them. Thus, the thought “It’s not really possible to be fully aware of one’s surroundings while dwelling on one specific idea”.

There has to always be a place where our awareness is focused, either internally or externally. We can’t focus on both simultaneously. It’s simply a matter of how much of that awareness is given to our surroundings or thoughts.

Engaging in daydreaming and taking our awareness internally is a good thing depending on how it’s used. Productive daydreaming has to be focused on topics relevant to the dreamers’ life and has to be realistic. Daydreaming is a very powerful tool if used correctly.

7.  Practice Meditation

Meditation is one very useful approach to knowing how to be mindful. During meditation, you should sit in an isolated corner for some hours and empty your mind. Making eye contact is a very important tool in mindfulness. Gazing is a type of meditation that can be done alone or with a partner. It is the practice of staring directly into someone’s eyes, in an attempt to zone in on an intention with the person you are sharing contact with. This could range from self-comfort to a deeper understanding of someone’s past lives.

In terms of partner gazing, the same thing is done, but those involved look at each other rather than gaze into a mirror. This gives the same effect, drawing people together, possibly even bringing a bond between those involved.
