Finding your purpose in life has become a necessary and imperative bridge anyone desiring peace must cross at one point in their lives. This can be a challenging experience as we constantly grow and evolve with each phase life peels.
Sometimes uncertainty in the next chapter of every story makes it more difficult for us to find our purpose and unveil our truth. More like life has its own plans while we are busy structuring a blueprint of survival.
Other times, life moves when we do not and this can be a struggle, life can toss us to several lanes, routes, and roads just to test the tenacity of our strength, this doesn’t alter our identity rather it shapes us for an empowering journey.
Finding your purpose, discovering your truth or becoming the best imperfect version of yourself with radical transformation, and fulfillment is what we all struggle to achieve at one phase or the other; we hit this bridge of self-discovery.
What we fail to understand is that we are constantly presented with a puzzle to design the life we want but this truth is something we do not embrace, we let the challenges bring a shortage to the magic and spark we all carry to fix the puzzle, we become causalities of life by the unrealistic expectations we set that turn out to be disappointments.
You may be at this point where you are struggling to outline your authenticity, you feel unhappy with your current life situation, you don’t have specific goals to chase, you are wondering what goals you should set, you don’t know what to do with your life, you are struggling to find your purpose with challenges, circumstance submerging you in doubt, you are evaluating your existence, you are wondering why you are here? The question to life answers oftentimes resides in finding one’s purpose. It is the recipe for a healthier, happier, fruitful and more interesting life. It is a process of self-reflection, introspection, listening closely and quietly, meditating, focusing and building one’s inner self and finding one’s drive.
The outlined ten steps below will help anyone seeking to find his or her purpose in life.
How To Find Your Purpose In Life
1. Evaluate Your Life
You are here not by way of coincidence or mistake, this whole universe is a dance floor that has been begging for your feet. So darling, do me this one favor and listen closely to the rhythms of survival, you will slowly get the answers on the best way to dominate and lighten the clouds with your sparks.
Your mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with passion, energy, and purpose. I want you to evaluate your life carefully through the sum of every high and low, what do you truly enjoy doing, what gives you life, what makes life worth living not surviving.
This may be a difficult question to analyze because even in the solitude of trying to listen, to learn from our experiences and circumstances. We get threatened by fear, by our limitations, by boundaries and in the process of wanting to play safe we may shut down the right tone of evaluation we need.
Things to evaluate
- Your roles.
- Your habits.
- The way you think.
- Why you think the way you do.
- Your words.
- The way you talk to yourself.
- Your morals.
- Who you’re being influenced by.
- And you want to be.
2. Allow Your Inner Voice Lead
Listen to your heart
We all have an inner compass residing in us which tells us where to go, what to do and the right path to take. When the voices from outside have faded into stillness or obscurity, it is that still, small and quiet voice that will point us in the right direction. It is what will tell us what to do and how to do it. This still small voice is our heart.
Most of us refuse to listen to our hearts because we are not sure and scared of failure and this itself is a good thing because it means that we are not overconfident which can be a foolish trait in decision making.
Others don’t listen and follow the voice of their heart because of self-doubt; they do not believe in themselves and are scared of putting themselves up for failure.
So, when they hear their heart talking or speaking to them, they put it off as something else or totally disregard it. Listening to your heart can prove a vital, better and rewarding way to find one’s purpose in life. It, however, requires that the setting of self-confidence and high self-esteem are on and in check.
Listening to your heart stems from your level of self-belief. You can’t listen to your heart when you do not trust yourself. It is extremely important to always trust your instincts because more often than not, in your journey to finding your purpose, you’ll most likely be making some heavy decisions all by yourself; you can’t do that when you do not even trust yourself.
Truth is, when you listen to your heart before making decisions, you have nothing to lose really. You either make a good decision or a bad one. Whatever it is, you are not at a loss rather you are learning. Trusting yourself is paramount in knowing how to find your purpose and passion in life.
3. Write Out A Life Purpose Statement
The purpose of my life is to put the burden of doubt down, take the compliment life throws through her tricks and turns, take the opportunity, take a breath, take a break from all the misuse of my wild mind and dominate.
A life purpose statement is a description of the definition of your immediate society and the world and what it should be like. It closely resembles the tip above of having a clear picture of what you want your life to look like.
The only difference is that in this case, the lens is shifting from yourself to the society closest to you and the world at large. Most times, we make New Year resolution list and hope to follow and fulfill them religiously. A life purpose statement is somewhat similar to a New Year resolution list.
It tells us how we think the world can be a better and more conducive and convenient place to live in, not just for us but for everyone in it.
Sit down and pen down what you really want. Be intentional about your goals and give specifics to each point. When you have them all written down, they become easier to achieve.
4. Have A Clear, Concise And Lucid Image About Your Life
In the struggle and quest for survival, we encounter challenges and difficulties that can shut our eyes from the need for growth and it becomes difficult to have a clear portrait of what life is painting but this is extremely important.
In order to find your purpose, we have to understand that things fall apart to make way for something new to emerge. You might not understand your current obstacle but you will eventually.
All things are aligning for your greater good. You’ve just got to have faith that things will get better.
It is a man who knows himself that can conveniently discover his purpose in life and stand firm, boisterous and buoyant against the storms, challenges, and crises of life thrown at him on a daily basis.
It is such a man that can change life’s limes into smiles, change stone into gold, change something grotesque into something picturesque.
Once the goal of your life is clear, it is easy to get focused and not derailed by every wind. An individual who does not have a clear goal or path about his life is likely to be moved by every wind of change.
Having a clear image of your life revolves around asking questions like: What will a perfect life look like for me? What is my best vision about life? What is my greatest goal or aim in life? What is my idea of a perfect financial status? Adopting productive and self-improving journal prompts to constantly keep a check on your life by answering the right questions.
Most of us have an idea about what we want in life but we do not push clearly the boundaries of these ideas which are to say these ideas are always hazy, foggy and misty. We need to seek to make the images of what we want our life to look more clearer and visible to the eye that sees them.
Having a clear goal about where we want our life to provide us with the best and perfect answer to knowing what our purpose in life should be.
5. Fill Your Clique With People Of Positive Minds
When you walk with trash you end up smelling the same, when you keep or surrounds yourself with people who have a blueprint of survival, who have realist intentions about life, it keeps you on tracks and challenges you to do better, to strive to hit your goals, follow your passion and have a fulfilling life.
Most times our friends or the clique we are closely associated with define who and what we are. A person who surrounds himself with people of positive thinking is likely to find a purpose in life among such a group.
When your clique is filled with people of negative mind, pessimistic and those who believe that every day is a black clod and every minute is a crisis waiting to be birthed to reality, one can never get passionate about anything.
It will be a long shot at finding purpose and being passionate at something if the folks around you do not make meaningful or positive contributions to your life.
The people you move around play major roles in determining how you think. If you surround yourself with pessimistic people, you will most definitely not head anywhere in life. Surround yourself with people who will push you to be a better person. Share your ideas with people are visionaries, not people who are blinded to the intentions of growth.
Positivity is contagious, so is negativity; you make the choice. Your choice plays a key role in helping you know how to find your purpose and passion in life.
6. Take A Life Purpose Or Passion Test
The passion test was created and developed by Chris and Janet Atwood. It is a simple, yet realistic operation that can aid anyone in discovering their life’s true purpose. To begin, one is expected to fill in the blank spaces for 15 times, responding and writing to the following statement: When my life is ideal, I am…
After successfully answering and responding to the statement, you identify the top 5 choices. This is done by comparing the responses number one and two then deciding which is most important.
The more important of the two is then compared with response number three to decide which is less important. Take the winner of that comparison and decide whether it is more or less important than the response number four. Continue this until you have successfully decided the most important and meaningful to you.
The process is then carried out again with the remaining fourteen to decide your second choice. Then repeat the process until you have identified your top 5 passions in life.
7. Connect With Yourself
Connecting with yourself could be by indulging in the following activities
- Creating space for ‘’you time’’ in the morning.
- Start (or continue) a journaling practice.
- Take intentional daily time to tune into your body.
- Reconnect with your values, beliefs, and intentions.
- Carve out time to do a short daily self-check-in.
- Sometimes replace social media with creativity time.
- Implement a breath work+ mindfulness practice.
- Schedule any kind of movement into your day.
- Remember times when you have achieved a goal or felt fulfilled.
- Pay attention to your feelings, thoughts, and emotions.
- Evaluate if your actions are bringing you closer to your goals.
- Accept that you cannot control everything.
- Nurture self-love.
You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously.
8. Listen To People’s Feedback And Opinion
It can be hard and difficult a task figuring out what you love doing but listening to the opinion and perception of others regarding stuff that you do can provide one with a needed insight.
One might have many skills and talents and might like every one of them equally that it might seem a hard task to choose the one he or she might love the most.
However, people around us can watch and notice that we put energy, zest, zeal or enthusiasm into a particular activity more than we put into others, or that we seem happier and more at peace at one activity over the other without us even realizing it.
Again, you can ask people’s opinions about you and what they think about you, your art and your craft. It might be important to make notes and decide which one gets the most votes.
However, one has to be careful because sometimes, people can say what they do not mean and anything to get you off their back. So, the persons or people one asks have to be honest individuals who can provide you with a pathway to knowing how to find your purpose and passion in life.
Now, it is important to state here that you are not under compulsion to accept every advice offered to you. Some feedbacks are given with hopes of breaking you.
You need to master the art of filtering the opinions and picking the useful ones while discarding the useless ones.
To sum up, knowing how to find your purpose and passion in life is not always as easy as it seems. You’d go through a whole lot but at the end of the day, there’s a surety that it’ll all be worth it.
If you have read the article to this point and you don’t know your purpose, I believe that soon enough, with the consciousness this article must have awakened in you, you should discover your purpose soon.
9. Examine And Pursue Deeply The Things That Interest You
Perhaps there is a conversation you can never stop talking about or something that gives you joy and you can discuss conveniently for hours.
Pursuing such a topic of interest can give one insight into their purpose in life. In fact, the most essential factor in knowing how to find your purpose and passion in life is knowing the things that interest you and going after them.
Truth is, if you do not pursue the things that interest you, you will most definitely get tired. At some point in your journey to learning how to find your passion and purpose in life, you will most definitely meet challenges and difficulties.
At these points, your drive and strength would only come from the fact that you have a target which can only be a reality if it’s genuinely what interests you.
If you go after the things that do not naturally interest you, you will get tired easily and give up. It could be analyzing numbers and solving difficult mathematical questions. It could be watching and reviewing musical and theatric performances.
It could be volunteering to serve as campus or tour guide during an excursion, or volunteering for a care home or mission to help those in war-ravaged countries. It could be listening to musical instruments for hours unending.
The human brain has been said to house a plethora of skills that most of us do not tap from. For everything, we find joy and happiness in doing, or those things we just love, there is usually an attached skill to it. Discover the things that you love doing and pursue them because they might provide the perfect panacea to discovering one’s purpose in life.
It might require practice after discovering what we love but what activity does not require continuous and constant practice to get good and better at it, if not perfect at it.
10. Before You Leave
This is specially for you as a constant reminder- Remember life doesn’t always work in the context of the negative; it’s about how much you let the negative affect you, your internal response and external reaction. If you feel like there’s something out there that you’re supposed to be doing, if you have a passion for it, then stop wishing and just do it.
In your journey of self-discovery and passion I want you to adopt these life hacks
- Make time to engage in activities that brings you pleasure- The things you are passionate about are not random, they are your calling.
- Find a tribe of positive and supportive people.
- Find the silver lining in all dark clouds.
- Be Assertive.
