“If you ask what is the single most important key to longevity, I would have to say it is avoiding worry, stress, and tension. And if you didn’t ask me, I’d still have to say it.” – George F. Burns
It’s not a strange thing to worry about money. Even those who are financially comfortable or cannot be qualified as broke still worry about money and their financial future at times.
Sometimes you’re anxious about what will happen with your financial life that it gradually becomes to affect other areas of your life. If you do not know how to stop worrying about money and start living, it will have major effects on your life and these are some of them
Mental Health And Overall Productivity
Everything has a disadvantage and although, being concerned about your financial life and wanting to improve is a good thing but if you let it get to a stage where you constantly worry about money and it builds to anxiety, your thinking may get clouded by fear and anxiety, which will, in turn, affect your overall productivity.
You may even start to doubt yourself because you are working so hard and expecting big and quick results, but you have let yourself become clouded by anxiety and you focus only on the setbacks and refuse to acknowledge your progress.
Many millennials have higher rates of anxiety and depression because they have been baited into a lot of financial pressure that leads to debt at a young age.
Physical Health

Yes, it is very possible that your constant money worries can affect your physical health. Studies show that “money stress” is a factor in health issues like cardiovascular disease, sleep problems, and more. And the irony of this is that when you keep worrying about money your overall health can be challenged.
Relationships
Constant worry about money is a factor that causes a lot of tension in marriages and relationships. As we all know “Love is sweet but when money is involved, love is sweeter.” Someone who is constantly worried about money would find it hard to be empathetic or romantic.
If you are in a relationship where the weight of your finances becomes overbearing, a fight is likely to happen and one of you may say something with less grace than usual and which you may not mean. In fact, money has been the leading cause of divorce for decades.
This worry about money may also cause financial infidelity. If the topic of finance is something that turns into a fight, someone might begin to hide their spending and savings.
As you have now seen, worrying about money does nothing but bring harm to major areas in your life. A popular saying goes “worry solves nothing.” The effects of worrying about money has buttressed this point so far.
I’m sure now you have questions like okay, now that I’ve seen the effects of worrying about money and I genuinely want to stop worrying, how can I do it? How do I stop worrying about money problems? How do I stop stressing over money? You are not alone.
There is an answer to that question. It is possible to stop worrying about money and change the course of your life. And we will be exploring all the possible ways to stop worrying about money in this article, so be sure to read to the end and follow through with the recommended tips and guides.
How To Worry Less About Money

1. Have A Solid Plan

A plan is a very effective way to be in control of your finances, and being in control will give you a sense of confidence and direction. When you own your money with a plan that you are following, you are less likely to worry or be confused. Your program should consist of a monthly budget, a list of financial dos and don’ts, an emergency fund, and long-term investment plans.
If you are in debt, which is what is making you worry, a plan is also a great way to stop worrying. When you want to plan for offsetting your bills and debts, you have to be very honest with yourself about how much you owe.
Do not let the figures scare you. Avoiding the debt would not make it go away. Plan how much you want to offset the debt, either daily or monthly, whichever way works for you, and stick to it. When you have a plan that you follow, naturally, peace of mind follows.
2. Focus On Today

You should think of the future, but if you let yourself get obsessed with what-ifs questions on how your lot would turn out, you will begin to worry. This worry will develop into fear, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Focus on facts.
On the facts that you have a plan, and so far, you are committed to following that plan; your future will turn out fine and just the way you have planned. If you cannot stop worrying, talk to a financial adviser about your retirement plan or an investment plan. Stop making up terrible scenarios in your head about your future. If you have a plan, it will work out just fine.
I must emphasize again that focusing on today does not mean that you live without a plan or you decide to go through life with the You Only Live Once mentality.
The main cause of worry is fear. Your worry about money stems from the fact that you are so afraid of what the future holds. And I’m assuring you that your worry would not make things better but instead might even make what you worry would happen a reality. Plan for the future but do not be so agitated and anxious that it beings to affect your present. Focus on today. Life’s journey is step by step.
3. Have Multiple Streams Of Income

Having more than one stream of income will help you minimize worrying. The constant fear of losing your job will build up anxiety you may not be able to control. Having multiple income streams would give you peace of mind that you have something else to fall back on if one fails.
One benefit of having multiple streams of income is that it gives you financial stability. You are rest assured that you always have something to fall back on and in my opinion, this eliminates worry.
If you do not already have multiple streams of income, begin to work towards it today. Turn that hobby or talent of yours into a side hustle. I know someone who has a very tasking job but she tells me that whenever she sits down to design a dress, she feels at peace.
And also, she knows that if she loses her job today, she cannot go broke. This is exactly what having multiple streams of income does. You are at peace and there is no room for worry.
4. Cultivate Financial Discipline

Sometimes, you are the sole cause of your worry. You want to spend extravagantly, and you know what you can comfortably afford and cannot. You cannot live above your means and not constantly worry about money. If worrying about money affects your life, then cut back on the luxury items that you do not need.
Stop the habit of impulse purchase. Avoid debts at all costs. Start saving. Know the difference between wants and needs. Start an investment plan. Have a budget and follow it. Read books and watch videos or listen to podcasts on financial literacy. Be disciplined financially and be financially aware.
The same way you cannot be worried about an examination you have thoughtfully prepared for and have a grounded knowledge on is the same way you cannot worry about money if you have an adequate understanding of money.
Do not be the sole cause of your worry. Begin your journey to financial discipline today and you will not have to worry about money all the time.
5. Know Your Weaknesses

Creating a plan would consist of a budget that may not give too much room for impulse purchases. Everyone has that one thing or things that you cannot resist spending your money on, even if it involves dipping into your emergency fund or “borrowing from your savings”, as I call it.
I used to be a victim of this; I would be making an impulse purchase using money from my savings and convince myself that I’m just borrowing from it and would pay it back. Of course, I never pay back most of the time, which would affect my performance in achieving the financial goals I have set for myself.
If you do not quickly identify your weaknesses and work on them, it will continue to affect your financial plans to the extent that you start to worry about money constantly. Your weaknesses may not be totally eradicated, but if you are aware of them, you will be able to work on them to the extent that you know you have nothing to worry about.
6. Accept Financial Loss With Grace

Yes, I mean it. Another effective way on how to worry less about money is to accept financial loss with grace. You must come to terms with the fact that your plans may not always go through.
Be ready to accept failures and move on as soon as possible. You cannot be prepared for everything. There is no way to predict a tragedy or disaster. An insurance plan should make you worry less about a disaster.
You must know that tragedy can strike at any time, and you must be ready to move on and not let yourself get too invested in the loss that it begins to affect your financial life.
You can try this; instead of worrying about a financial loss or accidents, plan for these situations. At the beginning of this article, I stated clearly that worry solves nothing. How about you stop worrying and start planning.
7. Practice Gratitude

When you constantly worry about money, you somehow forget that you are making progress and focus only on the setbacks. If you do not sit back and take time to take account of your progress, you may begin to feel like you are not doing anything. A good way on how to worry less about money is to focus on the positives.
Please write down the progress you are making financially and meditate on them; this would, in turn, keep you motivated to do more and eradicate any form of worry.
Gratitude is a very effective way on how to worry less about money. You may not know how much progress you are making until you reflect. Check the financial goals you have set and see how much progress you have made. If you are lagging behind, still be grateful. There is always something to be grateful for.
8. Set Aside Time For Review

You cannot have a plan and follow through without looking back. You have to set aside time every week exclusively for examining your finances. Check your account balance, your bills payment, review your budget, talk to your financial officer or spouse.
Also, at the end of the month, take time to review your bank statements to know how you have been spending. While you study, you can also score yourself on your performance, spending, savings, and how much debt you paid, if there is any. There are some applications online that would help you review your financial goals and overall performance.
Depending on how committed you are, you will feel motivated to do better instead of worry. This is another way on how to worry less about money.
If you do not have an organized life, you will always worry. Periodically, intentionally take time to review your finances for progress, lapses, and appropriate adjustment. When you are in control, you will worry less.
9. Have An Emergency Fund

Your emergency fund should consist of actual savings that you put aside in emergencies and an insurance plan. Insurance is important. Do not assume or pray that nothing wrong would happen. Disasters are unpredictable.
Another stress reducer and how to worry less about money is to have money saved up in an emergency fund if anything expensive and unexpected happens. You are not expecting something terrible to happen, but it shouldn’t stop you from planning for it.
Make sure this money is easily accessible because it is for an emergency. Your emergency fund should not be tied up in a long-term investment plan. I should also add that your emergency fund is not to be borrowed for an impulse purchase.
10. Simplify Your Finances

Simplification is a solution to the overwhelming feeling that worrying would cause. Simplify your finances by combining various accounts. You are less likely to worry if you do not have so many accounts to manage.
If you have multiple streams of income, learn to outsource when necessary and delegate. Having fewer accounts to manage will calm your worries because it is a lot less to monitor and control.
Worry is a bad habit that can be difficult to break and, in this article, you have seen the things that worry can do to you and how to stop worrying about money. So it is high time you stopped worrying about money and start making lots of it instead.
