What To Do When Things Are Not Working Out

Sharing is caring!

Sometimes, we face tough challenges in life that we may not know what to do when things are not working out.

Some people may even give up on their goals and objectives because they feel mentally and emotionally overwhelmed to continue pushing for success.

They fail to realize that they can do a lot of things to overcome their challenges and correct certain mistakes.

In this article, I will share with you what to do when things are not working out. So kindly read through as it’s going to be a mind-changing experience for you!

Why Things Don’t Work Out For Me?

Sometimes, we think so much about what to do when things are not working out. But, unfortunately, we often do not realize that life doesn’t always work out as we have planned.

You may have the right strategy in place and get maximum support from other people, but life may choose to give you the things you didn’t ask for.

If you are experiencing a lot of challenges in life, try as much as you can to remain positive. When you are worried and sad, you won’t find a way out of your problems. You may be complicating issues with your worries.

You have to remember that no one has ever achieved great success without facing challenges along the line.

Therefore the best thing you can do is ask yourself what to do when things are not going as planned. By asking relevant questions, you will get new ideas to solve your problems.

Nobody likes to have bad experiences but they are almost inevitable. Sometimes, your bad experiences can indicate that you need to correct some mistakes you are making in life.

But, on the other hand, being in awful situations can cause a huge positive turnaround in your life when you work with the signs.

Don’t see yourself as a failure when things are not working out. Instead, accept that your current situation provides an opportunity to reevaluate your goals and look for long-lasting solutions to your problems.

If you’re thinking of what to do when things are not working out, never think of giving up. No one is a master of life. Everyone will most likely fail at a point in their lives.

However, what separates successful people from the rest is that they do not give up. Instead, they understand that they will eventually overcome them by making conscious and consistent efforts to solve their problems.

If you’ve ever asked yourself why things are not working out for you, these three factors may probably be the reason:

1.  You Have A Wrong Perspective About Life

People indeed see life differently. Some people are not optimistic about overcoming challenges, while others are certain that they will eventually scale through challenges.

However, people who became successful after passing through a lot of life’s hurdles often have one thing in common: they see life from a positive angle.

Things may not be working out simply because you have a wrong perspective about life. For example, maybe you have always thought that life is full of happiness and comfort.

On the other hand, perhaps you have experienced a lot of success that you do not realize life can also come with upsets. So when you begin to experience sad situations, you assume there’s no way you can get over them.

You must realize that life comes with different challenges, and even though there may be many happy moments, always prepare your mind for the tough days.

So when you begin to face challenges, you can always assure yourself that it will only take a matter of time to overcome your problems.

When your life seems to be moving in a different direction, you just need to pause for a while and retrace your steps. Sometimes, what you need to do when things are not working out is to look at life from another perspective.

2.  You Are Not Working On Yourself

Self-improvement is very important. From great sportsmen to the most sophisticated people in the world, self-improvement is a huge factor. If you complain about things not going as planned, it may be because you haven’t worked on yourself enough.

For example, you cannot be the fittest person at the gym if you don’t work on yourself daily. You must be ready to sacrifice so much time and energy to achieve that status.

So, if your plan of becoming a gym freak isn’t working out (pun intended), you simply need to improve yourself!

Increase the amount of time you spend at the gym, try out new exercise regimens, work on your muscular endurance, etc. Once you start working on yourself, you may discover that things will start getting better eventually.

3.  You Are More Hopeful And Less Active

Some people make the mistake of assuming that when they develop a positive mindset to things, they will begin to get good results. It doesn’t work that way.

Positivity only helps you remain focused and keep your mind on the goal. It doesn’t get you the trophy. Things may not be working out because you are not taking action; you’re just hopeful. Hope is only a fraction of the whole picture.

When you have a goal to accomplish, you must put enough effort into achieving your aim. You must be actively involved in creating problem-solving solutions and implementing them. Positivity may only take you to the ladder of success but you have to take action else you won’t climb.

What To Do When Things Are Not Going As Planned?

Life often comes with different experiences. Sometimes, we are having the best days of our lives, and the next time, we are going through a lot of challenges.

The reality of life is that it isn’t always a bed of roses. We will most likely experience a stormy day. However, it is what we do during those difficult times that make us stronger and more experienced.

Additionally, we usually make plans and set objectives to achieve our goals, and sometimes things don’t go as planned.

You may be worried about what to do when things are not going as planned. This part of the article will highlight twelve things to do when things are not working out. They are:

1.  Rethink And Re-evaluate Your Situation

In trying to find out what to do when things are not working out, you should probably take this first step: rethinking and reevaluating. Ask yourself certain questions like:

  • What went wrong?
  • Why are things not going as planned?
  • What mistakes have I made over time?
  • What should I do to make changes?
  • Where do I go from here?
  • When did I start getting it wrong?
  • Who should I seek help from?

These questions are extremely relevant and can help shape things for good. Therefore, when you realize that things are not going as planned, you should make a pause and reevaluate your situation. Don’t be too afraid to ask yourself relevant questions or seek support from the right people.

2.  It’s Okay To Complain About Your Problem But Don’t Worry Too Much

Recognizing that there is a problem puts you one step towards finding a solution. It’s okay if you talk about your problems and the challenges you are facing occasionally.

However, when you begin to create room for worry and other negative thoughts, anxiety and even depression may kick in. It’s a simple trick: worry less and look for long-lasting solutions.

A couple of weeks ago, I was having a conversation with a colleague. It revolved around certain issues in life and how we can cope despite a lot of challenges we face.

In response to a question I asked about how he’s coping with his own issues, he said to me, “see, I may be faced with a lot of challenges and tough situations.

Yet, I know that tough times do not last. So, I live my life worrying less about my problems. Of course, I won’t be able to find solutions when I worry too much. But when I talk to a few people about it, I may find a solution.”

After hearing him say that, I realized he was right. I realized that there was no point in letting our current situations get the best of us.

People become so concerned about their problems that they fail to find solutions. It was obvious that my colleague knew this “trick” of worrying less and focusing more.

3.  Take A Break If Need Be

Even the most talented individuals sometimes take a break when things are not going well. It is imperative to always remind yourself when to step on that break so that you don’t experience a crash.

When things are not going as planned, instead of pushing too hard to make corrections, sometimes all you need is to take a break from your engagements.

Then, when you feel you are in the best shape —both mentally and physically — to go again, you can get to work one more time.

This year alone, two of sports’ most illustrious personalities decided to take a break from all the pressures that come with being talented.

They felt mentally overwhelmed and needed to step back and take the burden off their shoulders. These two athletes are Naomi Osaka — a tennis superstar — and Simone Bile — considered the greatest gymnastics athlete by many.

The simple question is; if these famous people can take a break to relieve themselves of mental stress, why can’t you do so if need be?

4.  Try To Find Out Why You Are Upset

If you are wondering what to do when things are not working out, you should always open your mind to every factor that may be responsible.

Sometimes, when things are not going as planned, there are certain indicators that we tend to ignore. For example, you may get upset for no reason. However, the reality is that you don’t get upset without a cause. Something may not be going the way you want.

Therefore, it becomes a task for you to find out why you’re upset or what you are upset about. When you find answers to such questions, you will begin to seek solutions to your challenges.

5.  Analyze Your Problems And Try To Create Solutions

Critical analysis is key in seeking what to do when things are not going as planned. Always analyze your situation and look for what the problem is.

When you discover where the source of your problems, you will have a good chance of seeking the right ways to solve them.

In certain situations, instead of being too scared or worried, all you need to do is analyze the situation. When you analyze your situation, you will discover the problems and find solutions for them.

6.  Identify How The Problem Started (To Avoid Experiencing It Again)

Some people may overcome a life crisis only to pass through the same experience again.

When this happens, the individual had failed to identify the cause of their problems during the initial experience. Maybe somehow, they managed to get over the situation, thinking it wouldn’t come back.

The only way to completely get over unpleasant situations is to identify the origin of the problem.

When you know how it started, there’s a huge possibility that you will prevent such an experience from happening again. Therefore to avoid unpleasant déjà vu, be willing to get to the root of every problem you face.

7.  Acknowledge That It May Get A Lot Tougher

In learning what to do when things are not going as planned, you must accept that things may get tougher. When you realize that you cannot always get the best things in life, you will prepare your mind for whatever it brings.

When things are not working out, and you are working hard to find solutions, two things will eventually happen:

  •  The situation will get better or
  •  Things may get a lot tougher

Therefore, you must always prepare yourself for both experiences. Nevertheless, you should keep things positive and be hopeful that things will eventually get better.

8.  Do The Best You Can To Correct Your Mistakes

It is in our nature to make mistakes. So, when you make a mistake, don’t flog yourself too much. Rather, pick yourself up and try to correct your mistakes.

Most of the most successful people in the world have made countless mistakes in their lifetime. For some of those people, they found success after failing a couple of times.

Through the mistakes they made, they tried to make corrections that eventually made them become better people.

Six years ago, I met a young man in his mid-twenties during one of my talk shows on drug and alcohol addiction. He approached me after the show and narrated how he had been living a happier life after quitting cocaine consumption two and half years before.

He said he was so hooked up to cocaine that he became socially dysfunctional and couldn’t function properly without sniffing a dose of cocaine.

When he realized the mistake he had made in his life; he discovered it wasn’t too late to correct it.

So he made the change, and now he’s eternally grateful for putting so much effort into correcting his past mistakes.

9.  Pick Out A Few Lessons From The Experience

Whether you overcome an unpleasant experience or not, make sure you pick out a few lessons from the experience.

Your experiences will guide you to become a better, more competent, stronger, and more confident individual. In addition, with enough experience, you can always know what to do when things are not working out.

10.  Write Down The Good And Bad Experiences

Although it is not advisable to always think about the bad experiences you’ve had, it is okay to write them down.

Your unpleasant experiences will guide you through many phases in life. In addition, when you remember the sad things you have experienced, you will be more willing to ensure that it never happens again.

You should also write down your good experiences. Your good experiences can become a source of motivation when you’re facing certain challenges.

Therefore it is important to write down your experiences — whether good or bad — they can show you what to do when things are not working out.

11.  Always Draw Out The Positives In Every Situation

Many people believe that things happen for a reason. For them, such belief acts as a coping mechanism for unpleasant situations.

When they say such things, they are trying to draw out the positives from their situation. This is a great way to encourage themselves and show enough positivity.

When things are not working out, always try to learn a few things about the experience, making you grow stronger than ever before. Never have a negative mindset towards life’s situations because negativity limits capability.

12.  Be Thankful That You Are Alive

In everything you do — no matter the situation — be thankful for life. If you are not alive, you will not get a chance to start again and correct your previous mistakes.

Being alive is one of the best gifts we can ask for. When you are alive, you can continue to try and make attempts towards achieving your goals until you eventually do so.

Therefore, ask you to think about what to do when things are not working out, also, think about your life, and be thankful that you can still breathe. Here are 50 Gratitude Quotes To Inspire Thankfulness.

How Do You Stay Positive When Nothing Is Going Right?

Having a positive mindset is very important in our everyday lives. It is most important when things are not working out.

This is because you may be overwhelmed by the difficult situation you are facing, that you begin to have a lot of negative thoughts. Being positive is a way of helping you neutralize those thoughts and easing yourself off the pressure.

Below are some ways you can stay positive when nothing is going right:

  •  Be grateful that you are alive
  •  Always remember the light at the end of the tunnel
  •  Reflect on your past achievements and successes
  •  Think about the massive love and support you have gotten from family and friends
  •  Keep improving on yourself
  •  Create room for positive thoughts
  •  Avoid things that may make you feel bad
  •  Be confident and happy with yourself
  •  Take a short break if need be

How Do You Know If Things Will Get Better?

Even though we are not super humans, we can make fairly correct guesses about certain events in our lives when we think about the future. This is because our present actions can be used as indicators to determine what will happen to us in the future.

Therefore if you are thinking about what to do when things are not going as planned, you must also think about the future consequences of your actions.

On the other hand, if you are working hard to overcome challenges in your life, there is a huge possibility that things will eventually get better — it’s just a matter of time.

Additionally, you can draw inspiration from the lives of people you know who have passed through similar experiences. If things eventually got better for them, why do you think your case will be any different?

You must always have a sense of belief that things will work out fine, no matter the current situation. Being positive is also important. You should always carry a strong air of positivity wherever you go.

Whenever you feel sad, think about your future. You have a lot of things to achieve. There are so many things to be happy about in this world; your friends, family, colleagues, teammates, etc. Sad situations do not last forever.

Do Bad Times Last Forever?

Change, they say, is the only constant thing in life. But, in simple terms, nothing lasts forever, not even bad times. The truth is, everyone will most likely experience good times more than bad times during their lifetime.

No matter the situation you are passing through today, rest assured that everything will get back to normal one day. But, first, you just need to be proud of yourself and how far you have come.

Once, I met a woman who became a widow after her husband died in a car crash. Two years later, she would lose her ten-year-old daughter to cancer. She told me she hadn’t even finished mourning her husband when tragedy struck the second time.

She felt like she was living in an unfair world where sadness was unending. For months, she was socially withdrawn after her daughter died. She felt completely hopeless.

According to her, she survived those times through support from her friends and family members. She realized she had to get over their death and live a happier life. She felt she owed her friends and family her happiness.

Do Hard Times Make You Stronger?

When people overcome tough situations, they begin to see life from an entirely different angle. Also, because of their experience, they tend to grow stronger — both mentally and emotionally.

So, passing the hard times sometimes create tougher people. This is an advantage for you because it prepares you for whatever life brings.

I remember when I was passing through some emotional crisis some years ago. I tried to look for solutions that could solve the problem, but nothing seemed to work. Finally, I became so frustrated and wanted intentionally pushing everyone away.

It felt like I was carrying a heavy emotional burden that I didn’t know where to dump. Sometimes, I would lock myself in the room and cry for hours. I knew I was experiencing the most vulnerable stage of my life.

One day, I told myself I couldn’t continue letting my emotions get the best of me. I took the courage to visit a therapist. After a few months in therapy, I was back to my best.

Today, I feel confident about myself and know that I cannot let my emotions control me again. As a result, I became stronger and mentally prepared for anything that threatened to take away my happiness.

Conclusively, trying to know what to do when things are not working out can be highly beneficial. In the long term, it allows you to make correct your mistakes and develop problem-solving solutions.

One of the most important things to remember when things are not working out is that tough times do not last forever. Someday, things will eventually get better, and you would be glad you looked for solutions to fix the problems you are facing.

You must begin to realize that things may go wrong at a point in your life. However, some people are out there willing to support you when things go wrong, hoping that you get back to your feet. Likewise, on social media, people are waiting to encourage you.

All you have to do is join platforms like Little Step, Big Miles on Facebook and Instagram. You will get all the encouragement and support when you join.
