“If you look at it closely, most overnight successes took a long time” -Steve Jobs
The road to success as rightly said is not a bed of roses and you might have read a lot of articles on how to be successful but this article is going to be as practical as possible. Everyone has their definition of success but before you climb the ladder to success, make sure you are not leaning on the wrong wall.
Over the years, there have been so many talks on what the idea of success really means. So many people have given their perspective on what success should mean. Winston Churchill believes that “success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm”.
Another accomplished person, Tony Robbins had this to say when asked about his definition of success “My definition of success is to live your life in a way that causes you to feel a ton of pleasure and very little pain — and because of your lifestyle, have the people around you feel a lot more pleasure than they do pain”.
In fact, many accomplished people around the world, have given their definitions of success. Essentially, success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Of course, your aim does not have to be big.
In other words, you do not have to make millions of dollars before you are considered as successful. A simple accomplishment of the goals you have been meaning to reach is your definition of success. So, first things first, you have to know what success even means to you. When this definition is established, we can then proceed to the other parts of this article.

Your success is your outright responsibility, and in this article, I would be sharing 10 vital keys to success, or if you make, 10 amazing keys on how to be successful in life. I must warn, if you are here for some little, petty tips that would suit your ego, then you are reading the wrong article.
However, if you need some serious points on how to be successful in life then darling this article is for you.
1. Effective Planning
There is a popular saying that goes, “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. Effective planning is one of the most important keys to a successful life.
I cannot overemphasize this, planning has drastically improved my life from a limiting and unsuccessful state to a successful, productive and happy level. You have to decide what exactly you want and have an effective plan on how to reach your desired destination.
Setting goals and writing them down with deadlines will ensure clarity and momentum to work towards your goals. Break down your plan into goals, and have a plan for everything you hope to achieve. The ability to make an effective plan and follow-through is a key ingredient on how to be successful in life.
To be more practical, you should have a master plan which should consist of everything you hope to achieve, steps to take to achieve them, goals with deadlines to keep you in check and even habits to drop and to cultivate to help you achieve your desired result.
The master plan can further be broken down into a yearly plan, a monthly plan, a weekly plan, and a daily plan respectively. Alan Lakein has rightly said that “Planning is bringing the future to the present so you can do something about it now.”
The importance of practical and effective planning cannot be overemphasized. And by practical, I mean visualizing the person you hope to become, and making clear defined goals to become that person while developing the will to scale through the obstacles and challenges that would definitely come.
It is important that these are attainable and realistic plans to avoid going around in circles. This is key in knowing how to be successful in life.
“If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.” Albert Einstein.
2. Decision, Determination, Discipline
These three words go together in walking through the road to success. The decision to succeed must first be made and the determination to succeed follows, then discipline follows.
To make a decision to succeed, your mental and emotional state is important. You must rid yourself of every negative thought along the lines of “Succeeding is all about being lucky”, “People are born successful”, “I cannot attain such great height”.
Some people have already failed in their minds even before actually failing. It’s not what we think we are, but what we think we are not that is the problem.
As important as making a decision is, if you are not determined to succeed, your decision remains in your mind like a match stick waiting to be ignited. Determination is your will and drive towards a goal, state of mental resolution with regards to something. Determination cannot be defined without including will power, resilience and commitment.
To succeed, you must be strong-willed. Determination is knowing how much sleepless nights you would have, how much your social, emotional and even financial life would be affected in carrying out a project and still going ahead with that project.
To be determined does not mean you are oblivious of the challenges that you would encounter but staying unyielding despite those challenges.
Determination is what would keep you going when all seems not to be working. You have to be able to develop a tough skin to obstacles standing in the way of your success because only tough people last.
Discipline is the gas the match stick needs to start a fire. After making your decision to succeed which is getting your match stick, staying determined and resolute which is striking your match stick against the matchbox and igniting the fire, you need to take the ignited matchstick to the gas to start and actual fire that would last.
Decision and determination without discipline is just a matchstick that would definitely go off after a little while. Discipline is being able to control your impulses, your emotions and your behavior. It is discipline that gives you the confidence to follow up with your plans and tasks no matter how difficult it may seem.
Discipline is foregoing short term satisfaction for long term satisfaction. It is setting boundaries and saying NO where and when necessary. Jim Rohn’s words were “Discipline is the foundation upon which success is built. Lack of discipline inevitably leads to failure.” The whole point of reading this article might be futile if you lack self-discipline. It is key to knowing how to be successful in life.
3. Curb Procrastination
I typed “End Procrastination” as the heading of this key but on a second thought I wiped it off because saying ending procrastination is like saying animals can speak which is a myth. Every human must at one point in their life procrastinate, but it is important to know where to draw the line.
Procrastination is an unnecessary delay of action and while you may tell yourself that you are procrastinating to do something productive, the point remains that you are still procrastinating.
Procrastination is a thin line between success and failure and to break this habit all you need to do is to start from somewhere and be disciplined. I have created a proper guide on the core steps to curbing procrastination and getting things done here you have a proper check on this resource.
You must realize that the perfect moment for whatever you want to do is now, and not some other time. And eliminate every distraction you are likely to face. You need to finish up with a project and that notification pops up, turn off your phone or stay away from it.
Be accountable to yourself, stay disciplined and keep procrastination at its barest minimum. This is very important in knowing how to be successful in life.
4. Hone Your Skill
To hone your skill is to sharpen your skill and be the best at what you do. If you think you don’t have any special or important skills it is because you have not figured it out yet.
You have to reach the necessities required in marketing your skills to people to an undeniable conviction. You have to be great at what you do and be known for it. All you need to do is work finesse into your forte and you are on your way to success already.
To discover your skill if you haven’t, you have to ask yourself what you enjoy doing and what you get commended for doing the most. Enroll in trainings to get better make wide research. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, instead seek them and take advantage.
5. Be Passionate
There is an old saying that goes “If you love what you do, you never have to work”. I sort of agree to this assertion and this does not technically mean you do not have to work at all, it just means that because of the passion and love you have for what you do, you do not mind how much work you have to do.
“What is the reason I want to succeed?”, “What kind of success do I want to achieve?”, “Would I enjoy the process I have to take to succeed?”. These are important questions to ask yourself to determine how passionate you are about your success.
If the answers to these deep questions do not spark up your level of happiness and excitement then I doubt certainty to succeed.
6. Have The Right Association
Some people believe peer pressure only affects teenagers and that they are mature and strong-willed enough to stand by their decisions. But who you eventually become tells a lot about the people around you. If you want to know where exactly you are headed, check your closest associations. Where do you go when you cry for help? Who comes along when you are by yourself?
Success is not something you can obtain on your own. You have to be aided by the people around you and the association you keep. Until you start to reach out to people, it is nearly impossible to breakthrough.
“If you try to do everything by yourself, you will fail” -Tim Sykes.
You have to work hard and consciously build like-minded people around you. Don’t take the right association for granted. If a person adds value to you, take time to appreciate them because a successful relationship is built on mutual respect.
Your association will either enhance your dreams or choke them. King Solomon in his writing said “The companion of fools will suffer harm. He who walks with wise men will be wise, (and will succeed)”.
7. Be Committed
If you plan, determine to be disciplined, and become passionate about success but you are not willing to commit yourself, nothing is going to happen. You have to tenaciously commit your dreams with everything you have and you are. It is not what you have but what you do with what you have that makes all the difference.
Effectuate yourself to your dreams and work hard and smart towards it. Don’t settle for less and discard the average mentality. You must stay committed to what you passionately believe and do all to become that person you want to be. You will never discover the new oceans unless you lose sight of the shore.
Commitment is not replaceable if you are serious about getting the know-how on how to be successful in life.
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” Helen Keller.
8. Embrace Your Failures
“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up again”. -Vincent Lombardi
The preceding quote says it all. Failure is only final if you let it be. If you brood over your failures, you begin to doubt your ability and self-worth. Everyone at some point in their life has experienced failure and only those who accept that they have failed, learn from their mistakes and rise up again to the task, comes out successful.
I know you have probably heard this a million times but Thomas Edison failed the first 6,000 attempts to develop a light bulb. I can bet you have not even tried up to a hundred times. It’s always too soon to give up or to quit no matter the level of mistakes because only when you let your failure consume you is when you have failed.
Don’t nurse your hurt, instead, revert and convert them into positive energy. You’d never know how to succeed in life if you do not learn how to embrace your failures.
Henry Ford has rightly said, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” And so, if life knocks you down nine times over, get up 10! Get up smarter!
9. Invest In Yourself
Nobody wants a mediocre or a person of average quality. Every professional today started as an amateur. Consistent grooming is what shapes every professional into what you see in them today.
The best investment anyone can make is investing in themselves. Read good books and do not just skim through, study, reflect and relate it to your personal life. Make wide research. Develop various skills and become exceptionally good at it. Maintain a healthy lifestyle and do something spontaneous from time to time. Learn something new and spectacular each day. Reflect on the new things you have learned and build a positive mentality towards life.
10. Believe In Yourself
Before the world would believe in you, you need to first believe in yourself. Founder of Walt Disney Company, Walt Disney said “If you can dream it, you can do it.” People would at some point doubt your ability, but you must never become one of them. Replace negative thoughts of doubt and worry with positive words of affirmation to yourself.
Don’t nurse any thought of discouragement because it is only a matter of time before it begins to weigh you down. You can never go farther than you think because the mind is like a muscle. The more you stretch it, the more exercised it is to grow.
Control how you think and never doubt yourself. What you picture yourself as and believe you will become. Self-belief is vital to knowing how to succeed in life.
A wise man once said that you are only as successful as you are disciplined. Your level of discipline is key to how successful you will be. Your goals are just mere written or spoken words until you actualize them. If you do not work around increasing your level of discipline, you would find it really difficult to actualize your goals and make them a reality.
I have read a lot of misconceiving perceptions on the subject of success. So many persons equate success to having a lot of money. Others equate it to being famous. Truth is, the true yardstick for success can only be determined by the person who is actually in pursuit of success. So, do not feel pressured. Set your goals right, and pursue them aggressively.
So, there you have it, guys: amazing keys that will guide you on how to be successful in life. Remember, everything in this article will be unproductive if you do not establish a line of action. No one wants to be a failure but not everyone is willing to pay the price for success.
I wish you success on this successful journey you are about to begin or have already begun. Remember never to give up or resort to quitting and know that you are more than capable of succeeding if you put your mind to it. Those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones that do.
