How To Get In Shape – 10 Ways

Sharing is caring!

Admittedly, we’ve all thought about how to get in shape but sooner or later we realise that getting in shape is not as easy as it seems.

Maybe your motivation begins to dwindle, or there’s little time to even entertain the thought, or maybe it’s the pain post-leg day, if you’re like me. For whatever reason you gave up trying, I see you, and I’m happy to tell you that it is quite possible to get in shape.

If millions of people can do it, why not us? Learning how to get in shape is a dedicated process that requires more than just occasional workouts.

It involves a balanced approach that includes regular exercise, healthy eating, proper hydration, sufficient sleep, realistic goal setting, staying active throughout the day, monitoring progress, having a workout buddy, varying your workouts, and maintaining a positive and patient mindset.

It is the combined effort of all these acts that will get you in shape and keep you there. A little exercise everyday is better than a heavy one once a week. Here are tips on how to get in shape and how to incorporate these elements into your life to enable you to get in shape and maintain it.

1.  Regular Exercise Routine

Hold onto the little tip I shared above – “a little exercise everyday is better than a heavy one once a week”. Establishing a consistent exercise routine is crucial for getting in shape.

The key to building regularity and consistency is to start small. Do not overwhelm yourself. If you’re trying to lose weight, aim for a 20 minute run everyday and if you are trying to put on muscle start with the not so heavy equipment.

When you start with heavy equipment, you exhaust your body and your mind. As a beginner, you should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Your exercises could include running, cycling, swimming, brisk walking, skipping or lifting.

Additionally, incorporate strength training exercises for all major muscle groups twice a week. This could be weightlifting, resistance band exercises, or bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats.

Flexibility and balance exercises, such as yoga or Pilates, are also important to include in your routine to enhance overall fitness and prevent injuries. When on the journey to get in shape, it is important to focus on the journey rather than the destination.

2.  Healthy Eating Habits

When learning how to get in shape, you should tweak your diet to what suits your body needs. Nutrition is a key component of fitness. Focus on consuming a balanced diet that includes a variety of whole foods. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.

Practice portion control and avoid overeating by listening to your body’s hunger cues. You should also try to minimise the intake of processed foods and sugary snacks, opting instead for natural, nutrient-dense options.

If you’re trying to build muscle or increase your weight, check out weight and dietary supplements that aid bulking and weight gain. You may want to consult a health professional or your gym trainer when constructing a diet/nutrition plan.

3.  Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for overall health and fitness. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before, during, and after workouts.

Water helps regulate your body temperature, lubricates your joints, and transports nutrients to give you energy and keep you healthy. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, or more if you’re engaging in intense physical activity.

In order to be dedicated to staying hydrated, I advise that you take a bottle of water with you everywhere you go.

4.  Consistent Sleep Schedule

Getting enough sleep is vital for your recovery and well-being when trying to get in shape. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night if your schedule allows it.

Establish a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. A good night’s sleep helps your body recover from workouts, reduces stress, and improves your mental clarity and mood.

Sleeping is especially important for people who lift weights because the act of weight lifting can wear down your muscles and sleeping gives your body the opportunity to repair them. Sleeping also ensures that you have enough energy to exercise again the next time you’re at it.

5.  Set Realistic Goals

Setting achievable fitness goals is important for staying motivated and tracking progress. Start with small, attainable goals and gradually increase the difficulty as you improve.

For instance, if you’re new to running, begin with a goal of running a mile without stopping, then gradually increase the distance.

I have witnessed a lot of people kick off their fitness journeys with vows to workout everyday and before a week runs out, they fail at it. It is important to be as pragmatic as possible.

Consider your schedule and responsibilities when making fitness vows. For starters, you want to be exercising 3-4 times a week.

This number can increase once you notice yourself becoming comfortable – never become comfortable, set higher goals once a routine becomes convenient. In addition, celebrate your achievements along the way to stay motivated.

6.  Stay Active Throughout The Day

In addition to your regular exercise routine, it’s important to stay active throughout the day. Avoid prolonged periods of sitting by taking short breaks to stand, stretch, or walk around, especially if you are trying to lose weight.

Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or biking to work, or doing household chores.

Staying active throughout the day helps your body get used to the stress and movements required in exercising. By performing little chores, your body is constantly in motion, making your exercises easier to perform.

7.  Monitor Your Progress

Keeping track of your progress helps you stay motivated and make necessary adjustments to your routine. You can use a fitness journal, mobile app, or wearable device to record your workouts, monitor your diet, and track your progress towards your goals.

This will also let you know when you are becoming complacent or reaching new milestones. Being able to effectively track your past records versus the current one enables you to see how far you have come and set better goals for the future.

Regularly reviewing your progress can also help you identify areas for improvement and celebrate your successes.

8.  Find A Workout Buddy

Learning how to get in shape can be exhausting, so I recommend you find a workout buddy, or even a coach. Having a workout buddy can provide motivation, accountability, and support.

Partnering with a friend or joining a fitness group can make exercising more enjoyable and help you stay committed to your routine.

A workout buddy can offer you encouragement and friendly competition, pushing you to achieve your best. Having an accountability partner makes the journey easier because you are able to encourage each other when the journey gets tough.

The motivation workout buddies provide is also very important. Workout goals are not achieved over a short period of time and the path to achieving your goal can be quite lonely. The benefits of a workout buddy should never be underestimated.

9.  Mix Up Your Workouts

Variety is key to preventing boredom and keeping your body challenged. Mix up your workouts by trying different activities and exercises. This not only keeps things interesting but also helps you avoid plateaus (unequal parts) and work different muscle groups.

Incorporate a combination of cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises into your routine. Mixing up your exercises ensures that all parts of your body are included.

10.  Stay Positive And Patient

Learning how to get in shape is a journey that requires time, effort, and patience. It’s important to maintain a positive attitude and be patient with yourself. Understand that progress may be slow and that there will be setbacks along the way.

Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and stay focused on your long-term goals. Remember that consistency and persistence are key to success.

The fitness journey is not easy nor is it short, maintaining positivity throughout the process is very important. Learn to accept your body at all stages and be comforted by the efforts you are making toward getting in shape.

What Is The Fastest Way To Get In Shape?

The fastest way to get in shape is to consistently commune active exercise routines, healthy nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices. Here’s how to get in shape safely, effectively and fast:

1. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

HIIT is one of the most efficient ways to burn fat and build muscle quickly. Perform short bursts of intense exercise followed by brief rest periods. For example, sprint for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds, and repeat for 20 minutes. You can apply HIIT to running, cycling, or bodyweight exercises like burpees and jump squats.

2. Strength Training

Building muscle boosts your metabolism and helps tone your body. Focus on compound movements that work multiple muscle groups, such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and pull-ups. Aim for 3-4 strength training sessions per week, with each session lasting about 45-60 minutes.

3.  Clean Eating

Proper nutrition fuels your workouts and aids muscle recovery. Follow a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. Avoid processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive alcohol. Meal prepping can help ensure you always have healthy options available.

4.  Stay Hydrated

Hydration is crucial for increasing your performance and muscle recovery. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, aiming for at least 8-10 glasses. Increase your intake if you’re engaging in intense exercise. Exercises can’t be dehydrating because of how much sweat you create so make it a plan to always have a bottle of water on you.

5.  Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is essential for muscle recovery and overall health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a restful environment by minimising screen time before bed and keeping your bedroom cool and dark.

6.  Set Specific, Achievable Goals

Clear goals keep you focused and motivated. Set short-term and long-term fitness goals. For example, aim to lose 5 pounds in a month or run a 5K in under 30 minutes. Always track your progress and celebrate your achievements.

7.  Stay Active Throughout The Day

Consistent movement helps burn calories and improve overall fitness. Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or bike to work, or do household chores like cleaning and gardening. Doing this will make sure that your muscles are active.

8. Monitor Your Progress

Tracking progress helps you stay motivated and make necessary adjustments. Use a fitness journal, mobile app, or wearable device to record your workouts, monitor your diet, and track your progress. Regularly reviewing your progress can help you identify areas for improvement and celebrate your successes.

9.  Find A Workout Buddy

A workout partner can provide motivation, accountability, and support. Partner with a friend or join a fitness group. Exercising with others can make workouts more enjoyable and help you stay committed to your routine. Workout buddies are important for pulling each other along on the journey.

10.  Mix Up Your Workouts

Variety prevents boredom and keeps your body challenged. Try different activities and exercises to keep things interesting. Incorporate a combination of cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises into your routine.

11.  Stay Positive and Patient

Getting in shape is a journey that requires time and effort. Maintain a positive attitude and be patient with yourself. Understand that progress may be slow and that there will be setbacks along the way.

Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and stay focused on your long-term goals. Consistency and persistence are key to success.

Conclusion

By incorporating these elements on how to get in shape, you can achieve and maintain a healthy, fit body.

Stay committed to your routine, make healthy choices, and keep a positive mindset, and you’ll be well on your way to getting in shape.

Save this for later!
