“It is one thing to know how to save money and it is another thing to know how to save money fast; mastering the latter is key to financial success” ~ Anonymous
If you have ever wondered how you can save money from salary, or how you can save money each month, how you can save money fast, how to save money each month then this article is for you.
Saving is an integral part of your financial life. When things go sour and there seems to be no help around, the little amount you save up will always come handy. I am a huge fan of saving. There’s a beautiful feeling that comes with knowing that you have an amount of money saved up somewhere – even if you are not in need of it at the moment.
Now, the problem that normally pops up around the topic of saving is how to save up when one’s income is not even enough. There are thousands of people out there who really want to start saving but do not even know how to go about it in the first place.
And there is another set of people who do not know how to take out a particular amount of money, from their little income, for savings. I get this problem too, and that is why I am writing this article.
Learning how to save money as a teenager was tough for me because it meant that I had to be disciplined. For years, I struggled to make the most of the little income I was getting while in college. I had two problems, the first was that I was scared that I might be missing out on some things at that moment all due to the fact that I was saving.
The second was that I was not disciplined enough, with the little savings I had. The latter is probably the biggest problem most students face when it comes to saving. In this article, I will try as much as possible to touch these two areas while ensuring that feasible solutions are provided.
I remember having to save up to get my first smartphone. Likewise, I have saved up for many more reasons and trust me, the feeling that comes with having to satisfy your needs with your own money, is next to none!

Saving is an important way of accumulating wealth. You can save for many reasons. Thankfully, with the myriad of saving applications and websites, things are now easier.
Many people who find it hard to save on a tight budget or how to save money fast actually have the problem of overspending. And yes, there are a lot of articles on the internet on how to save money fast, but what most of these articles always miss is the fact that saving up on a tight budget, requires that you use your willpower.
Your willingness to save plays a huge role in the whole process. So, if you are not willing to save, then you have no business with this article. But if you are, I will suggest 20 tips on how you can save up despite being on a tight budget.
1. Separate Your Needs From Your Wants

Your needs are very different from your wants and it is important for you to know how to differentiate both. Your needs are things you cannot do without. Your wants are things you can do without even though you’d like to get them.
Often, people who have a problem with saving do not know how to place these needs and wants in the right categories. Water is a need. No one can exist without water. On the flip side, soda is not a need. It is a want. You can go on for days and even weeks without soda, but you cannot do say without water.
Do you catch my drift now? In dealing with your finance, you must realize that something can be important, but not necessary and realizing this is one of the fastest ways of learning how to save money fast.
2. Buy In Bulk
One other secret hack to saving on how to save money fast on a tight budget is buying in bulk. When you buy things in bulk, you automatically save a certain amount. This is because individual products often go on sale with extra amounts meant for profit gains.
I’ll use an analogy here: buying 12 bottles of water individually, would cost more than ordering for a dozen at once.
3. Cut Down On Groceries

If you really want to save up, you must learn to cut down on groceries. Trust me, you can do without groceries for as long as you want. Most people get shocked when they realize how much they actually spend on groceries.
If you are the average American family, chances are that you might be spending above $600 per month. I mean, it so easy walking around the mall and picking packs of Oreos and bottles of apple juice, but by the time you are done picking those, you’d be shocked at how much you could have actually saved. At the end of the month, your budget is blown up!
So, what do you do in place of irrationally spending on groceries? You plan your meals. Write down a plan for your meal purchases. Also, if you can, please leave your kids at home so you can stick to your list and have no distractions. If you do this, in no time, you learn how to save money fast.
4. Say Goodbye To Debts
Yes! This is probably the most important step to mastering how to save money fast. You must master the art of being content with what you have. You do not have to borrow to live.
Debts rob you of your income. So, it’s time you get rid of that debt. The fastest way to pay off your debt is through the debt snowball method. This is a method where you pay off your debt from the smallest to the largest. Of course, it won’t be easy but with time, your debts will be off.
5. Cancel Automatic Subscriptions And Memberships

This is another way on how to save money fast. There are chances that you are subscribed to Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, gym memberships and Amazon Prime. If you’re not using any of these on a regular basis, then you should turn off the “auto-renew” feature.
You could also consider sharing memberships with family or friends on subscriptions that you want around. With an upgraded account, most streaming services can allow you to watch from two or more screens. That’s a better way to save and win!
6. Save Money Automatically
It’s 2020 and things have changed! You do not have to “intentionally” save up. There are amazing apps out there that can help you master how to save fast on a low income.

8. Borrow, Don’t Buy
You do not have to buy all the things that you need. Sounds crazy but if they are things you would only be using for a short period, why not borrow? Borrowing/renting is less expensive than buying and that gives room for having extra amount while still enjoying value. The extra amount can go into your savings.
9. Invest In Yourself

One of the most effective ways on how to save money fast is by investing in yourself and kicking up a side hustle. There are so many ways to make extra money today that will enable you to save up more and take care of your most vital needs.
And starting a side hustle is one of them, for your services to be valued by people you have to be trained on how to effectively proffer solutions to people’s problems and this comes solely by investing in yourself.
It could be taking an online course, listening to life inspiring and motivational podcast, reading more self-help books, attending more seminars, simply consuming knowledge and positive content that will uplift you from where you are.

There is no point having to buy your meal all the time when you could eat at home. Draw a meal plan and stick to it. Cooking or eating from home saves your money and consequently, you can have more money to save.
11. Ask About Discounts
From a personal experience, paying with cash is usually the best way of payment if you are trying to save up. Why? 12. Try A Spending Freeze

Try having a week or month where you do as much as you can to freeze your spending. The misconception that many people have about a spending freeze is that you do not have to spend at all, and so, they avoid it all costs.
But that is wrong, when observing a spending freeze, you are free to spend your money, however, for things you can get for free, no matter how difficult, you should never spend. This could go on for a week or a month and by the time you are done, you will definitely have enough to boost your savings.
13. DIY… A Lot
Do It Yourself! If you can do it yourself, there is no point buying it. There are thousands of DIY videos on YouTube. Unless you are in desperate need of that thing, you can always learn how to do it yourself online. Saves a lot, trust me.
14. Skip The Coffee Shop

Spending at coffee shops takes your money; you are trying to save up and so you would do better skipping it.
15. The Library Is Less Expensive
Before you pay for that book online, how about you check if you could get it at the library? The library is your friend and if you can get it for free, I see no reason for buying it, well, unless you do not want to save.
So, take a walk to the next library in your area, and check if they actually have that book you want to buy.
16. Try A “Staycation”

Instead of going on vacation, you can try a “staycation”. A staycation is the exact opposite of a vacation. During a vacation, you get to spend more. On the flip side, a staycation shields you away from the expenses you might incur during a vacation. And with that, you’d have more money to be used for savings.
17. Sell Everything (That Doesn’t Bring You Joy)
If it does not bring you joy, sell it. If it’s just taking space and you no longer get any form of utility from it, sell it. The proceeds from your sales can go into your savings.
