While goal setting is the foundation for achieving success and personal growth, it does not guarantee success.
What is more important is creating a system that enables you to measure/track your goals, without which you’ll be unable to maximize the full capabilities of goal setting.
How to measure progress toward goals is by setting specific, measurable milestones, tracking your goals daily or weekly using a goal-tracking app or a journal, seeking feedback from others, comparing current performance to past performance, and celebrating small wins to maintain motivation.
One thing many people struggle with when it comes to goal-setting is measuring their goals, and many people give up once they’re not seeing tangible progress.
If this happens to be you right now, then join me as we discuss practical approaches that will transform your goals and aspirations.

1. Set Specific, Measurable Milestones
A milestone is a minor achievement used to measure progress toward an overall goal.
It helps increase focus by allowing one to envision each step in one’s plan and produces a sense of accomplishment when met.
The first step to measuring progress toward goals is to break them down into smaller, specific, and measurable milestones.
By doing this, you’re able to maintain momentum and this can serve as a boost that propels you to success with your goals.
For each of your goals, identify specific milestones that serve as an indicator of success. These could be numerical targets, completion of tasks, or qualitative measures depending on the nature of the goal.
I employed this strategy by exercising thrice weekly rather than just saying that I wanted to be fit.
Making my goals very specific made it easier for me to track them and distinguish between success and failure.
While the end goal is to build up and maintain body fitness, setting specific milestones like exercising three times weekly means that for each week that I exercise up to three times, I’m three steps closer to my fitness goals.
Other examples of setting measurable milestones include making five sales pitches per week, reading at least a chapter of a book daily, jogging every morning, and observing a no-screen day weekly.
Milestones are powerful motivators for achieving goals because they instil confidence, provide tangible evidence of actual performance, and allow you to celebrate the small wins that are easily missed along the way.
2. Track Daily Or Weekly Activities Related To The Goal
Tracking daily or weekly activities related to your goals is how to measure progress towards goals and allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of your strategies while also gaining insight into your progress.
It helps you know where to concentrate your efforts to stay on track and is a way of gaining instant feedback on your goals.
I remember when I first started my fitness goals and set out to exercise three times weekly.
Tracking my progress became vital to staying consistent as every weekend, I would sit down with my journal to review how many days I was able to exercise and whether I was able to hit my target.
This weekly check-in also enabled me to see how my body was responding and showed whether I was improving, helped me adjust my routines and made it easier to see where I was succeeding and where I needed to push harder to improve.
Tracking progress towards your goals daily or weekly helps you stay engaged and committed to your goals, thereby enhancing your focus and concentration.
Tracking your goals regularly also ensures that your actions align with your goals and objectives.
Doing this transforms your journey into measurable outcomes, making it easier to identify areas of improvement and success.
3. Maintain A Journal To Reflect On Experiences And Changes
Measuring progress towards goals involves recording your experiences and reflecting on them occasionally.
You can achieve this by using a journal, which allows you to record your emotions, triggers, and coping mechanisms for stressful situations on a daily basis.
This is helpful for observing patterns, identifying triggers, and monitoring your improvement.
A journal can come in any form, be it physical or digital, and should be something you can refer to regularly to track your progress.
Reflecting regularly on your experiences allows you to step back and examine how your actions are influencing your goals, allowing you to see if something needs to be changed or improved.
How will you track your progress in achieving your goal?
To make this more practical, you can decide to write down what actions you took towards your goals every day, and at the end of the week, review your journal and see how much progress you’ve made.
By using a journal to reflect on experiences and changes, you can figure out what works and what doesn’t, which can serve as motivation to keep going.
This also helps you determine how close or distant you are to achieving your goals and serves as a testament to your journey.
A journal can be physical or digital, with the choice of what type of journal to go with entirely an individual decision.
To help me track my goals and activities, I keep a physical journal where I write down important events that happened to me, lessons from classes or audio, action plans, and goals.
I also use the digital note app; “Keep Notes” to help me document important events and information. This keeps information easily accessible to me at any time, especially in cases where my physical journal might be out of reach.
It allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds while reflecting regularly on my journey and experiences.
4. Use A Goal-Tracking App Or Tool
How to measure progress towards goals requires using the right goal-tracking app or tool to help monitor your progress towards your goals.
But before choosing a goal-tracking app/tool, consider how you can integrate the app with your goals, the app’s ease of use, and whether the app has enough feedback mechanism to enable you to analyse progress.
Identify trends, and supply sound data that can help with decision making.
Many tools and apps available on Play Store or Apple Store can help you set goals, visualize data through charts and graphs, and analyse your data.
To track my goals, I use the Habitify App, which allows me to set up multiple goals and set their frequency, i.e., whether they’ll be carried out daily, weekly, monthly, or a certain number of times within a week, e.g., 3 times per week.
This allows me to track my progress with my goals. I can log in to the app and check off my tasks for the day whenever I accomplish them.
At the end of the week/month/year, I can also check out the progress section of the app to see how well I performed at a particular goal or all the goals within a certain period of time.
The app also allows me to share my progress with others, which is a way of holding myself accountable to people.
I’m also able to set reminders, track progress, and generate reports while keeping a log of my consistency and progress.
Doing this helps me save time, provide valuable feedback, and stay productive, which is how I measure progress towards goals.
By using a goal-tracking app, I’m able to stay organized, save time, visualize my progress, and see areas where change is necessary.
Applications like Habitify, Habit Now, Todoist, and Habitica, amongst others, allow you to set, track, and measure your progress in various aspects of life.
5. Evaluate Results Against Predetermined Criteria
One way to achieve progress towards your goals is to set relevant targets or criteria for yourself as a measure of success.
This means outlining specific results that indicate whether you’re progressing toward your goals.
How to measure progress toward goals is also by reviewing and reflecting on them and comparing your current results with your predetermined criteria.
This allows you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, acknowledge your challenges, and recognize opportunities for growth and improvement.
A practical approach to this can be setting a weekly objective of losing 5 kilos; at the end of each week, you weigh yourself and compare your weight against your stated purpose.
This helps you learn from your experiences and adjust your strategy to ensure continued progress.
6. Conduct Regular Self-Assessments Or Check-Ins
Conducting regular self-assessments or check-ins is how to measure progress towards goals.
To keep myself on track, I make a habit of checking in regularly with my goals. It’s like a personal pep talk – I get to review my progress, dive into feedback, and come up with real solutions to tackle any hurdles.
By making self-assessments a part of my routine, I’ve seen a real difference in staying focused and motivated on the path to success.
For check-ins to be effective, always schedule them at regular intervals, and this could be weekly, monthly, or however, you deem fit.
Conducting regular self-assessments also helps to monitor progress towards goals while also highlighting potential areas for improvement.
It also means that you’re able to tweak your strategies to ensure continuous progress, make informed decisions, and set new goals that align with your experiences.
It also means you can identify areas where you might be falling behind and rectify them quickly.
These check-ins can be carried out individually, through an accountability partner, or a support group.
This way, you receive feedback, support, and advice on the progress of your goals, thereby being a powerful motivator that keeps you going.
7. Seek Feedback From Others For Perspective
Seeking feedback from others is how to measure progress towards goals because you get to receive valuable insights and ideas and gain new perspectives.
For me, seeking feedback from others has been a total game-changer in measuring my goal progress.
I’ve found that getting input from the people I trust; like my close friends, family, and mentors, gives me a fresh perspective and sparks new ideas.
Even chatting with colleagues who’ve been there, done that, has helped me gain invaluable insights. So don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for feedback from the people in your life – you might be amazed at how it propels your progress!
When you ask others for progress feedback, they offer insights or perspectives that help you measure your goals more effectively. You also gain a different perspective, learn from other people’s experiences, and get support and encouragement.
Seeking feedback enables you to open up to change, adapt to new situations, overcome obstacles, cope with stress, and recover from setbacks.
Feedback helps you validate your progress, boost your confidence, and become accountable, thereby making the journey less lonely.
8. Compare Current Performance To Past Performance
Part of how to measure progress toward goals is by comparing your current performance to past performances.
A typical example is when I decided during the Covid-19 lockdown to build up a reading habit. I first started by joining a book club for accountability and motivation.
Then, I started by reading at least a few pages per day; at the end of about 3 months, I was able to read at least a chapter a day.
By comparing my current performance to my past performance, I could see how much I’ve improved and how much progress I’ve made.
Sometimes, your previous performances look better than your current ones, and this shouldn’t scare you; instead, it should encourage you to get back to where you used to be and to do even better.
It is essential to keep records of your current performance and compare them to your performance every week/month/year to help compare your current performance against past performance.
9. Create Visual Representations, Like Charts Or Graphs
How do you calculate actual progress?
Creating visual representations of your progress is the way to go and is how to measure progress toward goals, as you can track how far you have come and determine how much progress you’ve made.
These visual representations can be physical boards with images and words representing your goals or virtual boards on your phone or computer.
Another helpful tool for visualizing goals is a scoreboard, which enables you to track your achievements.
For this to be effective, it is necessary to make it a habit to update your scoreboard regularly, as this will give you immediate progress feedback and help you stay motivated.
A traditional way of measuring progress toward your goals is using a calendar and ticking off each day you carry out an action toward your goals.
This way, you can see how much closer you are to your goals and how consistent you’ve been with them.
Other methods of visual representation for tracking goals include a spreadsheet, a dashboard, Google Sheets, Notion, or a printable goal tracker.
Using visual representations makes progress more straightforward to understand and can be highly motivating.
10. Celebrate Small Wins To Maintain Motivation
When it comes to celebrating my wins, I love treating myself to a fancy coffee or a movie night in. It’s my way of patting myself on the back for all the hard work and reminding myself that progress, no matter how small, deserves recognition.
Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all way to celebrate; find what makes you happy, and make it your personal victory cheer!
By acknowledging your achievements, you’ll not only fuel your motivation but also make the journey towards your goals more enjoyable.
Doing this helps you stay motivated and focused on your goals, even if you’re still far from achieving them.
Not only will this keep you motivated, but it will also give you a confidence boost that will propel you to achieve your goals.Celebrating small wins has a positive effect on your mental health.
It gives you a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment while reinforcing the habit of tracking and measuring your progress.
11. Adjust Timelines And Strategies As Needed
As you continue to make progress with your goals while reviewing them periodically, you’ll get to a point where what seemed like a good idea at the start now looks like it might not be the best way after all.
This makes it pertinent that, you reassess your goals and strategies regularly and make the necessary changes where applicable.
There will be times when, after reassessing your goals and strategies, you will need to adjust the timeline to accommodate changes in strategy.
12. Review And Revise Goals Periodically Based On Progress
Reviewing and revising your goals periodically informs you of how much progress you’ve made and where you stand.
This review can be carried out monthly or quarterly. Reviewing your goals makes you more flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances or situations.
It ensures that you remain on the right track and allows you to make necessary adjustments in your approach to make your goals relevant and achievable.
Reviewing and revising your goals periodically ensures that you’re moving in the right direction and that your efforts are leading you toward your goal.
