Learn How To Have Perseverance In 12 Ways

Sharing is caring!

About four years ago, I decided to train for a 10K race. About halfway through my training, the enthusiasm started to fade. I remember my older brother making fun of me; in his defense, it really was funny; I had bragged to everyone at home about my Olympic-standard athleticism, and here I was.

The early mornings, sore muscles, and constant self-doubt made me wonder why I had even signed up in the first place. I wanted to quit so many times, but no, that would be disappointing to me, and we, my brother, won’t let it go forever.

And so each time, I had to dig a little deeper to find the motivation to keep going. Looking back, that journey taught me more about perseverance than I ever expected, honestly. It wasn’t about finishing fast or looking perfect; I learnt more about pushing through when things got tough and showing up, even on the hardest days.

Getting your way around how to have perseverance really does start from the mind. It’s about starting with goals that actually matter to you and breaking them down into small steps easy and small wins keep you going.

A routine usually helps, and having a growth mindset keeps you open to the ups and downs. Patience is quite important also and of course, learn from the mistakes, adapt to changes, and just keep rolling with it.

As we move to the rest of this article, we’ll go through steps to help you develop an unwavering mindset, keep your motivation alive, and find joy in the process—even when it’s challenging.

1. Make Well-Defined Goals

To begin your journey in mastering how to have perseverance, have clear, well-defined goals. If you don’t know where you’re headed, you most likely will get lost. Think of it like setting your GPS before going on a road trip to a destination you’ve never been to before.

Write down whatever it might be that you want to achieve, whether it’s learning a tech skill, getting fit, or finishing that book. The clearer your goals are, the easier it is for you to remain focused and motivated.

Well-defined goals take out the issue of confusion; you know exactly where you are headed, so confusion can’t stress you out into giving up. Stop making vague ambitions like “I want to be healthier” and go for something specific like “I’ll go for a 30-minute walk three times a week.”

Doing this will help keep your eyes on the exact track you should be on.

2. Break Those Goals Into Smaller Steps

Now that you have your well-defined goals, break them down into smaller-sized steps. Let’s say your big goal is to write a book. Instead of just staring at that blank page, scared and not sure of what to start with, you should allocate time to small parts of the task, like “write one page a day” or “brainstorm chapter ideas.”

It’s just to prevent you from getting exhausted with the whole process and maybe even start considering giving up. You’ll see that it’ll make your goals seem less overwhelming.

Managing yourself this way consistently will create momentum over time. Plus, just completing those little broken-down tasks can be so exciting, which will push you to keep going till you’re done with the entire task.

3. Find What Motivates You

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing that’s why we recommend it daily.”  Zig Ziglar. We all need a little reminder now and then.

So, figure out what gives you that push, and keep it front and center. Just like the quote says, motivation isn’t a one-time thing; it needs regular boosting. Write it down, put it where you can see it, or set those reminders on your phone.

That way, even on low-energy days, you’ve got a quick pick-me-up ready to go. Ask yourself “What drives me?” Is it the satisfaction you get from finishing what you started, the compliments and praise from others, or perhaps the thrill you get from proving yourself wrong? Whatever it is, tap into that energy and run with it.

As usual, write it down; writing things down makes it feel more real; keep it in your workspace or set reminders on your phone to give you that extra boost when your motivation drops.

4. Create A Routine

A solid routine can do wonders for your perseverance. Making out a daily or weekly structure around your goals helps make your actions and reactions automatic. For example, if you’re trying to get fit, you should schedule your workout sessions just like any important appointment.

Consistency builds habits over time, which makes it easier to keep going even on days when your motivation wanes. You should also be mindful of how you structure your routines, it should be tailored to what you can handle.

Routines don’t have to be rigid; they should serve you and your goals, so feel free to tweak them as you progress and find what works best for you.

5. Embrace A Growth Mindset

We hear this all the time, about almost everything. To get a different result, there has to be a shift in the way you think. Adopting a growth mindset is mostly about believing that you can improve and learn through effort.

Constantly talking down on yourself isn’t going to help you keep going, it’s okay to make mistakes sometimes. When challenges arise (and they will), see them as an avenue to grow instead of giving up.

If you’re struggling with a job, think of it as a chance to refine your skills or learn something new, for your future job. By shifting your perspective, you’re more likely to keep pushing through these obstacles rather than complaining and resigning to defeat.

6. Be Patient

One of my high school teachers usually said Patience is the best virtue. I didn’t agree with her then, and honestly, I still don’t, but I now see where she was coming from, though “best” is a bit of a stretch. Patience is quite essential nonetheless.

It gives you the grace to allow things to happen naturally (which is usually the best way). When learning how to have perseverance you need to practice patience. Progress often takes time, and it’s easy to get discouraged if you expect immediate results.

Good things come to those who wait (and work hard). Celebrate those little things you’ve been able to achieve along the way and trust that every step, no matter how small, is bringing you closer to your ultimate goal.

7. Seek Support From Friends And Family

You don’t have to go through this journey alone. Seek support from your friends and family. It can feel embarrassing sometimes to be vulnerable, but it’s actually fine. You’re human, and at the end of the day, it can make a huge difference in helping you persevere.

Share your goals with them, and let them know how they can help if it’s financially, by being your accountability partner or just someone to listen to when you need to vent. Having that support system not only keeps you accountable but also lifts your spirits when the going gets tough and you can trust that it will.

8. Be Grateful For Your Small Wins

Gratitude is also another powerful tool in building perseverance. Be grateful for those small wins, it doesn’t matter how small. Life can be a bit tricky at times, and you can fail at the easiest things, so when you’re able to pull through, remind yourself that you did that and you’re capable.

Acknowledging these victories, no matter how inconsequential that might seem, reinforces positive feelings and helps maintain your motivation. Take a moment at the end of each day to reflect on what you accomplished, and you’ll find that even the smallest steps forward are worth celebrating.

9. Learn From Your Mistakes

Mistakes are a part of the journey, so why dwell on them? Use them as learning opportunities. When you fall, ask yourself what went wrong and what you can do differently next time.

This kind of mindset only helps you grow and also makes it easier to get back up and keep pushing forward. A popular Nigerian Pidgin English says “Na who give up, mess up,” this just means you only truly lose when you let your mistakes keep you from persevering.

Perseverance isn’t about never failing; it’s about getting back up and trying again with newfound knowledge.

10. Try To Adapt To Changes

Flexibility is so important because life is unpredictable, and adapting to changes plays a huge role in your perseverance. Sometimes, your plans might go awry, and that’s just fine.

Instead of resisting change, a better response will be to embrace it and touch up your approach to work under this new circumstance. Flexibility can lead you to get new opportunities and ideas that you may not have considered otherwise. Stay open-minded, and don’t be afraid to pivot when necessary.

11. Be Kind To Yourself When Things Get Tough

People tend to be nicer to their loved ones than themselves at times. When a friend is going through a rough time, you’ll find that as a good friend, you’re always ready to talk them up and show them the kindness they can’t seem to show themselves at the time. You need to channel that energy to yourself too. When things get tough, don’t be too hard on yourself.

Everyone faces challenges. Being kind to yourself during difficult times is really important. Treat yourself with the same compassion you’d offer your friend. Acknowledge that it’s okay to feel exhausted and take breaks when needed.

12. Always Remain Positive

This might seem a bit difficult because sometimes things can just be too much and staying positive at that time will just seem impossible. Staying positive doesn’t mean you should pretend like you’re fine and laugh off the situation; it means you should acknowledge the issue but maintain optimism because it really isn’t the end.

Maintaining a positive attitude is a game-changer when it comes to perseverance. Focus on the silver linings. Surround yourself with positive influences, uplifting friends, inspiring quotes, or motivational podcasts. Positivity not only lifts your spirits but also supports your determination to keep pushing through.

Importance Of Perseverance

Perseverance it’s one of those words we hear all the time but rarely stop to think about. When we hear stories of athletes, entrepreneurs, or artists who “made it,” we’re always blown away by their talent or skill, but often, it’s their ability to keep going despite setbacks that’s the real magic.

Think of all the times you’ve tried something new or tried to handle a big project. How many times did you hit a roadblock, feel like giving up, or question if you were even capable? That’s where perseverance steps in. It’s not just about putting in effort; it’s about sticking with it, especially when things don’t go as planned.

The truth is that perseverance is what separates people who just dream from those who actually make their dreams happen. It’s not that those who succeed never face challenges they face tons. But they keep pushing, learning, and adapting.

They get knocked down, but they keep finding ways to get back up. Think about Thomas Edison, who reportedly failed over a thousand times before inventing the light bulb. He famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” That’s perseverance in action.

And while perseverance sounds like a lot of work (and it is), it’s worth every bit of effort. In the long run, it builds resilience, builds your self-confidence, and usually leads to results that wouldn’t have been possible if you’d quit halfway.

Each time you persevere, you’re telling yourself, “I’ve got this.” So, let’s dig into our minds and shift it towards disciplining ourselves to keep persevering, because it yields results.

Conclusion

One thing to always keep in mind is that setbacks will always come, and they will make you feel like giving up, but all that matters is the end goal. Every obstacle is just a step toward where you want to be.

Staying focused on the bigger picture keeps you moving forward. Keep your eyes on the prize, and let that fuel your perseverance. “To conquer frustration, one must remain intensely focused on the outcome, not the obstacles.” — T.F. Hodge
