Sharing is caring!

Every one of us, at one point in our lives or the other, has envisioned and desired a dream life; a better existence that is picturesque and rich with pleasurable and meaningful things.

Now, the first thing to note is that it is healthy and very important to the personal growth and development of an individual to have vivid dreams of a life which you do not yet have but desire. What you do with those dreams, however, matters a great lot.

A dream life can be regarded as a reality where everything you love and deem important is in your possession. It is a deeply satisfying existence where all your worries are behind you and even greater successes are in front of you.

Your dream life might be a business of your own, a desirable job or significant position in a respectable or prominent organization; it might be a meaningful relationship with a loving partner that gets you; perhaps, it is to reach a distinguished height in your academic pursuit, whatever it may be, it is most certainly good, desirable and likely to make you very happy.

However, as soon as these dreams come into our heads, many of us relegate it to the back of our minds where we keep unrealistic and unrealizable ideas. That is to say, many people believe that the dream life is as an impossible and unattainable El Dorado; a fairy-tale land too good to be true. Yet it is possible to exist in a world where you have all you will ever desire.

Of course, this begs the question: why then do a lot of people live terrifying life of unhappiness, poverty, and frustration? Well, with the risk of sounding too reductionist, this is because people, in most cases, make certain mistakes that hold them back from actualizing their dream lives.

Mistakes That Can Hold You Back

Mistakes are often thought of as one wrong action or judgment but there could also be attitudes, convictions, and habits held over a period that limits our ability to make positive changes in our lives; changes that would have been steps in the direction of our dream lives.

In this article, we’ll be taking you around 10 costly mistakes that can hold you back from your dream life. We’ll also take you through ways you can avoid these pitfalls and turn them around for good. By the end of this journey, I’m absolutely certain there’ll be a lot for you to take, digest and reflect on. So if you’re are ready, let’s dive in.

1.  An Impossibility Mind-Set

Your mind-set towards the actualization of your dream life matters a great deal. Some people go about with an impossibility mentality and miss out on all the opportunities in life. They rationalize it as being realistic and honest to themselves and see positive people as gullible and delusional.

In people like this, there is often an underlying fear that things will not turn out in their favor. This deep-rooted fear cripples them and leaves them incapable of bringing their dream lives to fruition.

In order to live a dream life, you must cast all your fears aside and be courageous. You must tell yourself that even if a hundred people had failed to accomplish your current dream, you will come out victorious.

2.  Procrastination

English writer, Edward Young described procrastination as the thief of time but that is not all it steals. You see, your use of time is very essential in actualizing your dreams; at every moment in time, you should be engaged in something aimed at making your dreams a reality.

If you are a student looking to graduate at the top of your class, for example, you must always study or engage in related exercises aimed at excelling in the discipline in question; not doing so would be detrimental to the actualization of your goals.

Besides, procrastination gives you time to brood over negativity and doubt yourself. Every time you postpone that first step towards your goal, you add a mile to the journey ahead.

Ensure your doubts do not have breathing space, and the only way to do this is by diving headfirst into the actualization pool without pausing to second guess yourself.

Procrastination may come in the guise of waiting for a perfect moment when you are better prepared or everything has magically aligned. Truth is, there is no such thing as a perfect moment and things will never magically align nor will you be better prepared unless you do something about it.

3.  Holding On To Bad Experiences Of The Past

That you have tried and failed to do something is not a good enough reason to give up. Yes, failure can be daunting and discouraging but the best thing to do in such situations is to learn from your past and become better. Always remember that hardly is anything great achieved without some failure in the process.

Past negative experiences present great opportunities worth tapping into. For one, you are bound to be better prepared for next time and as they say: experience is the best teacher.

Besides, wallowing in the regrets and shame of the past will not help you achieve anything worthwhile and the best way to shake off those negativities is to give it another try.

4.  Making Comparisons With Others

A huge mistake a lot of people make which holds them back from their dream life is comparing themselves with other people. It does not matter if you think the people you are comparing yourself with are your mates; you must understand that everyone runs a different race.

Making comparisons is particularly dangerous because if the person you are comparing yourself to is better than you, you are bound to feel jealous or envious. None of which will help you achieve your dream life.

If the reverse is the case, that is, if you are better than the person you have compared yourself to, you will likely feel complacent and you may no longer feel the urge to reach your goals which would certainly derail your journey to the Promised Land, so to speak.

5.  Dwelling On What You Don’t Have

Some people are unable to actualize their dream lives because they are fixated on the things they do not have which they think they need to succeed. Such people can often be heard lamenting on a past mistake that stopped them from achieving a desired result.

Believe me; it is easy to blame your family, a poor educational background, or government policies for your inability to get ahead. Mind you, I am not saying these factors do not militate against the achievement of a dream life, they do, but you can succeed despite them.

Always have it in mind that there are many ways to the hallway; that is to say when one door shuts, another opens but if you remain focused on the closed door, how can you see the opened one waiting for you?

Focusing on inadequacies and shortcomings will only keep you down. Do not fantasize about what could have been, instead dream about what can be. Never give up no matter what. Do not give in to the temptation to wallow in self-pity and regret; instead, forge on with all that you have because you are all you need to succeed.

6.  Having The What Will Be Will Be Mentality

A mistake some people make is thinking that whatever will be will be, with or without their input. That is a very dangerous idea that can hold you back from your dream life. Do not wait for something to happen, make it happen.

No, the money you need to start that dream project will likely not fall from the sky into your hands, you may have to burst open the heavens. Play an active role in the achievement of your dreams.

Do not however expect that everything will go as planned or that every door you knock on will automatically open for you. You may get a truckload of rejections before you get even one acceptance. When this happens, do not be discouraged; it comes with the territory, remained dogged and determined.

7.  Living In Denial

Although you should never brood on your inadequacies, it is important you at least acknowledge their existence. By recognizing your shortcomings, you give room for much-needed improvements and development.

It is not positive thinking to denial your present condition simply because it is less than pleasant or depressing. You must realize that in order to work on it, you must first see it for what it is. See your current circumstance as a hurdle – a challenge – you have to scale.

Even as you start to work on these challenges, do not expect huge changes overnight, and do not be discouraged when you do not see them. Be happy and thankful for the small positive changes and keep at it until you reach your goal.

8.  Making A Big Deal Of Setbacks

Setbacks are a natural part of the journey to your dream life which you must learn to move on from. The most you can do with every setback is to learn from it. Meditating on them or making them more than they are will only prevent you from going forward.

Understand that failure makes a successful person; what you do with it matters much. Every setback you experience is an opportunity to get better and find a more efficient way. Refuse to be held down by it, instead use it as a launchpad to your dream life.

A look at the life story of anyone worth their salt will reveal a lot of setbacks, but what they all have in common is that they were able to use these to their advantage and come up on top better than ever.

9.  Exposing Yourself To Every Information Available

In order to achieve your dreams, you must learn to guard yourself against negative kinds of information. Understand that the information you receive shapes the way you view and approach things, as such, you should make a conscious and deliberate effort to only hear things that will bolster your confidence.

It is very easy to be derailed by something as simple as an innocuous conversation with a colleague. Remember, all that is needed to crush one’s dream is a seed of doubt. The information might not even be deliberately targeted at you; this is why you must keep your guard up at all times.

While it is good to be well informed, some people actively seek out negative information about their dreams in the guise of making research. When they get these reports, they immediately accept them as good reasons why they should not pursue their dreams and end up giving up altogether.

Decide to be your gatekeeper; handpick the books you read, carefully choose the kind of media you consume and the friends you keep. Do not leave anything at all to chance. This is very important in ensuring you remain on track.

10.  Believing That Things Will Forever Remain The Way They Are

The only thing constant is change and you must always remember that. You must always have it in mind that the difficult circumstances you find yourself in today, will not remain like that forever. No matter how bad it gets, it is going to get better eventually.

A lot of people are too discouraged or afraid to follow through with their plan towards a dream life because they base everything on the belief that their current disparaging condition will never change. It will do everyone a world of good to be optimistic and to envision a better future.

Even when you are feeling like you have been dealt the wrong cards, it is extremely important you remain hopeful and forge ahead. Do not make the mistake of thinking that your condition is unchanging. Even if you have it good, think better. It will pay off in the end.

Final Words

Your attitudes, convictions, and habits matter a great deal in the actualization of your dreams. You must have a positive outlook on life. Be optimistic about your future and do not dwell on negativity, be it your past failures, fears, or what have you.

Do not fold your arms and expect your dreams to come true, take action! Avoid comparing yourself with others; you have your race to run. Always remember that your dream life is within your reach, grab it.
